What Actually Happens During A Federal Government Shutdown
Harry Reid and President Obama say a government shutdown would impact Social Security benefits. Experts disagree.
LtCol BJ Brown, USAF, Retired, Opinion Letter to Editor: What actually happens during a federal government shutdown?
Despite some of the nonsensical rhetoric coming from our national "leadership", Schumer and Reid in particular, mandatory spending continues even during a government shutdown.
- Social Security checks still go out to recipients.
- The military still gets paid.
- Essential services continue.
What we wind up without during such a shutdown are all non-essential services. To that, I say: FINE! Let's see how the country runs without non-essential government services. I'm betting we will do...just fine. The problem for the big-government types is that people may learn that their lives continue pretty much as usual during a government shutdown, when billions on Congressional are NOT being spent. Once that gets out, people may wonder why we need to spend all that money in the first place. THAT could help future budget decisions.

Good post Bill ... you're right, all essential operations remain intact, nobody loses out on their benefits, and only 20% or so of "nonessential" Government employees are negatively impacted. My question is, why not use this opportunity to permanently remove that 20%? And since, realistically, there is so much redundancy in Government, there is easily another 40% of Government that is useless and a drain on taxpayers - so I say let the Government shut down so we can save some money, begin whittling down these ridiculous nonessentials and reduce the Government to a manageable level.
It wouldn't affect any entitlements you wouldn't even know it shut down unless you read about it,business as usual for common folks.
The best choices for saving maximum money are shutdown Congress, their pay, retired Congressional pay, the White House west wing, and make the President pay for his trips abroad out of his pay from now on. Sheesh!
I remember that I couldn't cash my military paycheck last time the Govt. shut down.
You make a valid point
