What Black Friday Says About Raising Taxes
Rep. Jim Jordan (OH), Chair, House Republican Study Committee (RSC): The annual post-Thanksgiving shopping spree has become an American tradition. It’s also proof that people respond to prices. We like to buy when things go on sale, and we often delay or reduce purchases when prices go up.
The price of a day’s work is no exception. Every hour spent working is an hour not spent with the kids, going to school, relaxing, or pursuing other interests. We all consider these costs and choose how best to provide for ourselves and our families. But what happens when the government takes 40-50% of the next dollar you earn? For many, the reduced reward won’t be worth the cost, and our economy will suffer as a result.
Right now, liberals are trying to figure out how to raise taxes when what our economy needs is a simpler, fairer tax code with lower rates. If you want to raise revenue, do it with pro-growth tax reform that will encourage more jobs and more prosperity. Don’t do it by raising taxes.
The bottom line is that when it’s a matter of the pocketbook, people will respond.
