Replacing the President’s Sequester with Responsible Spending Cuts, Not More Tax Hikes
Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL) discusses the devastating cuts in President Obama's sequester, due to take effect March 1st. The House has passed two replacement plans with responsible spending cuts, and the President and Senate Democrats have yet to offer a serious replacement. It's time Washington Democrats work with us the replace the President's damaging sequester.
"There is a smarter way to reduce the size of government than to slash defense spending, threaten national security and hurt military families," says Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL) in the Weekly Republican Address. “In fact, the Republican-led House has already voted twice to replace the president’s sequester with targeted spending cuts based on real budget priorities."
Following are a few media comments on Rep Roby's comments:
“Calls on the president and Senate Democrats to join the House in stopping the sequester”: “In this week's Republican address, Alabama Congresswoman Martha Roby calls on the president and Senate Democrats to join the House in stopping the sequester… ‘There is a smarter way to reduce the size of government than to slash defense spending, threaten national security and hurt military families,’ she says, accusing the president and Congressional Democrats of holding up legislation that would replace the sequester. She adds that President Obama would like to ‘push through another tax increase,’ while ‘using the military he leads as leverage in an ideological crusade for higher taxes.’” (ABC News Radio, 2/16/13)
“Republicans say sequestration was an administration tactic birthed during the 2011 debt-limit negotiations”: “Republicans say sequestration was an administration tactic birthed during the 2011 debt-limit negotiations. Withhalf the cuts scheduled to fall on the Defense Department, Roby characterized sequestration as Obama’s ‘ideological crusade for higher taxes.’ Roby said her district would be especially hard hit by sequestration, as it is home to Fort Rucker. She said the aviation-training base would have to cut back by about 500 students and lose roughly 37,000 hours of training.” (The Hill, 2/16/13)
“Blamed the sequester on Obama and explained how it would hurt her district”: “Roby, a Republican from Alabama, blamed the sequester on Obama and explained how it would hurt her district. ‘Fort Rucker would lose 500 students training to be combat aviators and roughly 37,000 hours of aviation training,’ she said. ‘These numbers are astonishing. And remember, this is just one set of cuts at one base.’” (CNN, 2/16/13)
“Obama and Democrats want to use the so-called sequester to raise taxes”: ”In the Republican address, Rep. Martha Roby of Alabama says Congress must protect the military from devastating cuts by averting the automatic spending cuts set to hit onMarch 1. She says Obama and Democrats want to use the so-called sequester to raise taxes.” (Associated Press, 2/16/13)
“Said the looming cuts will hurt the military and military families”: “Congresswoman Martha Roby is taking her turn today carrying the Republican Party's message-of-the-week, namely that the looming sequester was President BarackObama's idea and it's a bad idea and Republicans have a better idea. Roby is the voice of that message via the GOP's weekly radio address. Roby said the looming cuts will hurt the military and military families. She said at Fort Rucker in Ozark that the sequester would cause the lost of 500 students training to be Army combat aviators and about 37,000 hours of flight training.” (al.com, 2/16/13)
“Roby urged President Obama to give in and start cutting:” “Republicans made another pitch Saturday for further cuts to the U.S. budget in their weekend radio address. Rep. Martha Roby, R-Ala., did the honors as Congress and the Obama administration faced the unpleasant deadline for theso-called sequestration cuts, which will hammer virtually all government spending programs. Roby urged President Obama to give in and start cutting. … Roby, whose district includes the U.S. Army base at Fort Rucker, said the president should find ‘better, more responsible spending cuts’ that will avoid the $85 billion in across-the-board reductions mandated by the sequestration plan, which kicks in March 1.” (UPI, 2/16/13)
“Calling on President Obama and Senate Democrats to join her party members in ‘replacing’” his sequester: “Representative Martha Roby of Alabama delivered this week’s Republican address, calling on President Obama and Senate Democrats to join her party members in ‘replacing’ the proposed across-the-board cuts on military spending with ‘better, more responsible spending cuts.’ … It is a shame that our commander in chief is using the military he leads as leverage in an ideological crusade for higher taxes,’ she said. ‘These games have got to stop.’” (The New York Times, 2/16/13)
