New Poll: Over 60% Fear Obamacare Will Increase Health Care Costs | More IRS Scadals
Today in Washington, D.C. - June 3, 2013:
Today the Senate resumed consideration of S. 954, the farm bill. Votes Scheduled at 5:30 pm on amendments to the bill from Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE).
The House will work late today and consider the following bills:
H.R. 1919 — "To amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act with respect to the pharmaceutical distribution supply chain, and for other purposes."
H.R. 126 — "To direct the Secretary of the Interior to enter into an agreement to provide for management of the free-roaming wild horses in and around the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge."
H.R. 885 — "To expand the boundary of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, to conduct a study of potential land acquisitions, and for other purposes."
H.R. 1206 — "To grant the Secretary of the Interior permanent authority to authorize States to issue electronic duck stamps, and for other purposes."
S. 622 — "To amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to reauthorize user fee programs relating to new animal drugs and generic new animal drugs."
Controversy continues around the IRS and its apparent pre-meditate effort to delay conservatives groups applying for 503(c)4 status. Brietbart.com reported yesterday on "House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) revealed new testimony from IRS employees on CNN's State of The Union on Sunday. According to transcribed excerpts released by the Committee, a Cincinnati IRS employee made it clear they were told by Washington, D.C. personnel to give extra scrutiny to Tea Party groups."
Today, Americans for Limited Government President Nathan Mehrens responded to the article with the damning new testimony by IRS employees stating "Washington, D.C., wanted some cases" on the tea party and calling the two "rogue" agents explanation "impossible… the chance of two agents being rogue and doing things like that could never happen." and affirmed that the purpose of the targeting was to go after conservative groups:"The original story given to the American people that the IRS scandal originated with two 'rogue' employees in Cincinnati is unraveling rapidly. Now that testimony from IRS employees has revealed that it was the Washington, D.C., and not the Cincinnati office that requested tea party applications be flagged, it is becoming increasingly clear that a special counsel must be appointed by Attorney General Eric Holder to the bottom of this of this gross misconduct.
"This is an extraordinary case of political viewpoint discrimination by the agency. To assure the American people that politics will not interfere with the outcome of the investigation, an independent, special prosecutor is required." On Top of this, we learn from the AP today that "The Internal Revenue Service, already under fire after officials disclosed that the agency targeted conservative groups, faces increased scrutiny because of an inspector general's report that it spent about $50 million to hold at least 220 conferences for employees between 2010 and 2012. The report by the Treasury Department's inspector general about conference spending is set to be released Tuesday" [Tomorrow].
CNBC reports today, “There's no assurance folks will be buying insurance under Obamacare, and that could spell trouble for the Affordable Care Act. Nearly two-thirds of Americans who currently lack health insurance don't know yet if they will purchase that coverage by the Jan. 1 deadline set by the ACA, a new survey revealed Monday. And less than half of those in the survey released by InsuranceQuotes.com think they'll get better health care after Obamacare takes full effect. Nearly 50 percent believe the ACA will make it more difficult for them to get tests and procedures done in a timely manner, according to the phone survey of 1,001 adult Americans conducted in early May. . . . Laura Adams, senior insurance analyst at InsuranceQuotes.com, said public uncertainty about Obamacare—particularly a lack of commitment to signing up—could end up driving up health-insurance costs under the program because not enough healthy people will participate to offset benefits payouts. ‘I was really shocked that 64 percent [of uninsured adults] said they haven't decided if they will purchase insurance by the Jan. 1 deadline,’ Adams said. ‘I was definitely surprised by the high number of people who really have no clue what they're going to do next year.’”
It really shouldn’t be surprising that the maze of rules, regulations, and mandates created by Obamacare is confusing for Americans. After all, recall that the original application for Obamacare subsidies was 21 pages long. And of course there’s the gargantuan stack of regulations generated by the bill, which exceeds 20,000 pages.
However, Americans do seem to have a good sense as to the impact this law will have on our health care system. According to CNBC, “In other findings of the survey, more than 60 percent of Americans said they fear Obamacare will lead to increased health-care costs. Just 26 percent predicted such costs will go down under the program, according the survey by InsuranceQuotes . . . .”
As Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said last month, “It’s not hard to see why the Democrat Chairman of the Finance Committee called this law a ‘train wreck.’ It’s not hard to see why so many Democrats are now airing their concerns about the law out in public. I wish they’d considered these consequences before – not after – passing the law. It’s not like Republicans weren’t warning about all of this. It’s not like independent experts across the country weren’t saying almost exactly the same thing. And it’s not like common sense wouldn’t simply dictate much of these outcomes either. . . . What he really needs to do, actually, is join with Republicans in agreeing to repeal this job-killing law. He needs to acknowledge the need to scrap it and replace it with the types of common-sense reforms that will lower costs. Because it’s not working.”
