Iran Sanctions: Why Won’t Senate Dems Vote?
Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactor |
178 House Democrats Already Voted For Tougher Sanctions On Iran But Their Senate Counterparts Are Blocking Debate
- “The U.S. House of Representatives has overwhelmingly approved legislation that would impose the toughest sanctions yet on Iran, calling the measure a critical step to cripple the country's disputed nuclear program…” (The New York Times, 7/31/13)
- REP. STENY HOYER (D-MD): “When you have 400 plus members in a body of 435, asserting support for Israel and its security that sends a very powerful message of unity, particularly in a Congress that has difficulty achieving unity.” (Jerusalem Post, 8/12/13)
- “Led by Sens. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Menendez, a large bipartisan group of senators has been pushing legislation to drastically limit Iran’s ability to export petroleum if the Islamic Republic breaks the conditions of an interim agreement or abandons a permanent nuclear deal with global powers. It also would require a dramatic rollback of Iran’s nuclear program as a condition for further lifting existing sanctions.” (Politico, 2/6/14)
- SEN. ROBERT MENENDEZ (D-NJ): “Prospective sanctions will influence Iran’s calculus and accelerate that process toward achieving a meaningful diplomatic resolution.” (The Hill, 12/19/13)
