US Faces "Global Instability,” Border Crisis, Secret Transfers Of Children & Sluggish Economy, As Obama Campaigns & Hosts Dinner Parties & Senate Dems Attack 1st Amendment
Today in Washington, D.C., July 14, 2014
The Senate reconvened at 2 PM today and began a period of morning business. No votes are scheduled for today. Tomorrow morning, the Senate is scheduled to vote on two nominees to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Norman Bay and Cheryl LaFleur.
The House reconvened at Noon. Today the are considering
H.R. 5031 — "To define STEM education to include computer science, and to support existing STEM education programs at the National Science Foundation."
H.R. 5056 — "To improve the efficiency of Federal research and development, and for other purposes."
H.R. 5029 — "To provide for the establishment of a body to identify and coordinate international science and technology cooperation that can strengthen the domestic science and technology enterprise and support United States foreign policy goals."
H.R. 4185 — "To revise certain authorities of the District of Columbia courts, the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency for the District of Columbia, and the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, and for other purposes."
And, potentially some bills naming of buildings legislation.
The House this week may address the issue of the illegal alien invasion (principally unaccompanied children) from Central America.
Adriana Cohen, Boston Herald, reports, "It's finally been confirmed what was suspected all along -- Massachusetts is feeling the pain of the chaotic border crisis. Forget the denials. Secret flights of illegal immigrants have made their way to Bedford and Boston. . . . We've learned from immigration officials that four planes filled with detainees nabbed on the border landed at Hanscom Field and Logan International Airport since April as the U.S. scrambles to cap the immigration crisis. . . .
"So why haven't local communities been notified? This should alarm everybody in the Bay State, because we don't know how many illegals are passing through or hanging around; what communicable diseases they may carry; if any are sex offenders, drug-runners, gang members or terrorists.
"This operation of moving illegals from Texas to Hanscom to Logan and back again has been shrouded in secrecy, putting our health and security at risk. It's unacceptable for the president to run such a risky loop without coming clean with the American people. The president promised transparency in his administration and that is a flat-out joke. We have a right to know who's coming into our community.
"ICE agents and doctors treating illegals are being told to clam up. This begs the question: Is something really bad is going on? . . . If this is happening in Bedford, it could also be playing out -- very quietly -- in small towns and big cities all over the country. How would we know? It's a secret.
The president is asking for nearly $4 billion to help deal with 50,000 illegal kids flooding over the border. Like the rest of Obama's scandals, this border crisis is a gross violation of trust where we are lied to over and over again. Americans shouldn't be left in the dark."
The Wall Street Journal writes today, “A convergence of security crises is playing out around the globe, from the Palestinian territories and Iraq to Ukraine and the South China Sea, posing a serious challenge to President Barack Obama's foreign policy and reflecting a world in which U.S. global power seems increasingly tenuous. The breadth of global instability now unfolding hasn't been seen since the late 1970s, U.S. security strategists say, when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, revolutionary Islamists took power in Iran, and Southeast Asia was reeling in the wake of the U.S. exit from Vietnam. In the past month alone, the U.S. has faced twin civil wars in Iraq and Syria, renewed fighting between Israel and the Palestinians, an electoral crisis in Afghanistan and ethnic strife on the edge of Russia, in Ukraine. Off center stage, but high on the minds of U.S. officials, are growing fears that negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program could collapse this month, and that China is intensifying its territorial claims in East Asia.”
Politico reported last week, “The Obama administration again ramped up its estimates of the child migrant crisis at the southwest border Thursday — predicting as many as 90,000 unaccompanied minors could be apprehended before the end of this fiscal year Sept 30, a more than three-fold increase over 2013.”
Another WSJ story notes, “During and after the recession, the U.S. economy has been too weak for many workers to undertake the sort of job-hopping that economists say is critical to building careers and advancing the nation's long-run growth prospects. The consequence: Even many Americans who have remained employed have stunted their earnings growth by staying pinned down to their current jobs. . . . While the nation's jobless rate dropped to 6.1% in June, the lowest in nearly six years, the improvement masks the fact that many workers who held jobs throughout the downturn and recovery struggled to advance.”
So are Washington Democrats focused on any of these serious problems? Of course not.
The president is still avoiding the border, as he draws more and more fire from rank-and-file Democrats for it. CNN reports, “Yet more Democrats are piling on President Barack Obama for skipping a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border during his recent trip to Texas. ‘I wish he would have come to the border,’ said U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke, a Texas Democrat on CNN's State of the Union with Candy Crowley. ‘It would have sent an important message to the rest of the country about how seriously he takes this issue beyond the spending request he sent to Congress last week.’ Obama's decision to skip the border comes as more and more unaccompanied immigrant minors are making their way in the United States, creating what both Democrats and Republicans have called a humanitarian crisis.”
What will the president be doing, then? According to The Hill, “The president will speak twice on the importance of funding infrastructure — on Tuesday from a facility that tests new highway technologies in Northern Virginia and on Thursday from an infrastructure site in Delaware.”
Meanwhile, The New York Times takes note of the president’s penchant for dinner parties. “As one of an increasing number of late-night dinners in his second term, [a recent dinner in Rome] offers a glimpse into a president who prefers intellectuals to politicians, and into the rarefied company Mr. Obama may keep after he leaves the White House. Sometimes stretching into the small hours of the morning, the dinners reflect a restless president weary of the obligations of the White House and less concerned about the appearance of partying with the rich and celebrated. Freewheeling, with conversation touching on art, architecture and literature, the gatherings are a world away from the stilted meals Mr. Obama had last year with Senate Republican leaders at the Jefferson Hotel in Washington.”
What are Senate Democrats focused on? They’re not passing appropriations bills to fund the government, Congress’ most basic job. Instead they’re teeing up the latest in yet another series of political show votes. The Hill writes, “The Senate is expected to vote on legislation to reverse the Supreme Court decision allowing religious institutions to opt out of providing coverage for birth control. Democrats have seized on the issue ahead of the midterm elections, hoping that women voters opposed to the court's decision will turn out for their party in November. But like many other Senate Democratic initiatives this year, the Hobby Lobby bill is expected to fall short of the 60-vote threshold to move forward. Even if it were to pass the upper chamber, it would have no chance in the GOP-controlled House.” In other words, it’s another bill designed to turn the Senate into a campaign studio. And apparently the only thing about Obamacare that Democrats feel needs fixing is that it its mandates aren’t coercive enough.
And last week, instead of addressing any of the country’s problems, Senate Democrats gave attention to another of their priorities, passing out of committee a resolution “repealing part of the First Amendment,” as The Washington Times described it.
So America faces “global instability” that “hasn't been seen since the late 1970s,” a situation on the border that “both Democrats and Republicans have called a humanitarian crisis,” and a still-stunted job market, to name just a few problems. But the priorities of President Obama are a “roadshow” full of “campaign-style stops . . . ridiculing his political opponents,” as the AP notes, and apparently, “an increasing number of late-night dinners” “with the rich and celebrated.” And majority Senate Democrats are also ignoring all of these crises in favor of show votes that would cripple the First Amendment or roll back the religious liberties protected therein.
