U.S Government Failures Continue
Natalie Webb, Bankrupting America: While Congress is still on recess, several reports emerged about technical issues continuing to plague government agencies. The Treasury Inspector General For Tax Administration (TIGTA) reported the IRS failed to accurately collect medical device taxes. In addition, the IRS also failed to appropriately run background checks on contractors. Read on for the top stories for the week:
Improper Oversight Lead The IRS To Assess $700,000 In Improper Tax Penalties. According to a recent Treasury Inspector General For Tax Administration (TIGTA) report, the IRS mistakenly assessed 219 penalties, which lead to a collection of $700,000 in improper medical device tax revenue. While the IRS reversed 133 of those penalties, the inspector general found an additional 86 that could have been reversed that were missed.
IRS Also Failed To Properly Run Background Checks For Contractors. According to the Daily Caller, “Treasury Inspector General’s report that found serial failures on the part of the agency to conduct basic background checks on contractors used to handle sensitive taxpayer information. In just one instance, a computer disk with 1.4 million American names, addresses and even Social Security numbers was handled by contractors without background checks, putting taxpayers at unnecessary risk for fraud and identity theft.”
Spending On Medicare Programs Will Climb To At Least 6.26 Percent Of GDP By 2080. According to a recent analysis released by the Mercatus Center, “current law projections predict Medicare costs will be 6.26 percent of GDP in 2080.” However, the Medicare Trustees acknowledge that current law assumptions most likely understate the cost and baseline projections are more realistic.
Chinese Hackers Stole Medical Records For 4.5 Million Patients. The Washington Post reported, “Chinese hackers have stolen medical records for 4.5 million patients, according to a regulatory filing from Community Health Systems, a publicly-traded company that runs 206 hospitals in 29 states. The stolen data includes records for patients of who have seen doctors affiliated with the company in the past five years.”
More Individuals Are On Food Stamps Then Before The Recession. Total SNAP enrollment is currently at about 46 million Americans. According to The Fiscal Times, even though that number is down from the historical high of 48 million in 2012, “total enrollment remains nearly triple the 17 million food stamp users in 2000. In 2009 nearly 39 million people were on food stamps, and the number rose to 44 million in 2010.”
