Poll: 60% of Republicans Want Boehner Out as Speaker
Conservative Review Staff Editorial: In light of the stunning rebuke of the president and the Left by voters this past November, one would expect GOP leaders to be emboldened to fight Obama’s agenda and provide their constituents with a bold contrast.
That clearly hasn’t happened.
Now, as the new Congress prepares to convene and elect a Speaker, a newly released poll of GOP voters conducted by pollster Pat Caddell on behalf of People’s Poll shows that the current Speaker, John Boehner (R-OH), has lost the confidence of his own party’s voters.
According to the national poll, an overwhelming 60% of GOP voters want a new Speaker; only 25% would vote to keep Boehner.
These numbers are what you would expect from the members of the other party, not Republican voters.
What’s more striking about this poll is that when respondents were asked whether they felt Boehner has been ineffective in opposing Obama’s agenda, 64% agreed.
It’s safe to say that Democrat voters do not feel nearly as disenchanted with their leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). After all, she effectively advocates for the left-wing agenda.
It is also fairly safe to say that no respected party leader has polled this low among his own party’s voters unless he was embroiled in a major personal scandal.
With 60% of Republican voters desiring a more conservative Speaker, what does this mean for John Boehner next Tuesday – when members of the House will cast votes for the next Speaker? And how can Boehner continue to lead the opposition to President Obama when he has lost the confidence of his own party?
These are important questions self-described conservatives in the House must answer next Tuesday.
