Democrats Have 4th Chance To Debate Homeland Security Funding. Will They Filibuster It Yet Again?
So, he pushes Congressional Dems to fund his actions! |
The House met for a three minute pro-forma session on Friday, Feb 20. The House will reconvene at Noon on Tuesday Feb 24. with no recorded votes before 6:30 PM.
The Senate will reconvene at 3 PM today. Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND) will then be recognized for the annual reading of Washington’s Farewell Address. Following the reading, the Senate will recess until 4:30 PM.
At 4:30, the Senate will resume consideration of the motion to proceed to H.R. 240, the House-passed Homeland Security appropriations bill.
At 5:30, the Senate will vote on cloture on the motion to proceed to H.R. 240. This will be the fourth vote on proceeding to the bill after Democrats filibustered the three previous attempts.
Politico writes, “Late Monday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will force the fourth vote in three weeks on a bill to fund the [Homeland Security Department]. Senate Democrats will almost certainly block it again.”
This is now Senate Democrats’ fourth opportunity to vote to begin debate on a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security. Democrat leaders have spent a lot of time in the last few weeks proclaiming the importance of the department’s mission and the need to continue funding. They’ve also claimed they want to pass an appropriations bill different from the one the House passed.
To do those things, of course, the Senate needs to debate and amend the bill, but Senate Democrats have so far refused to allow that. Three separate times, Senate Democrats, including a number of senators who expressed serious misgivings about the president’s unprecedented executive actions on immigration last fall, have voted against allowing the Senate to take up the bill.
As Politico notes, “‘The only thing I would point out is that the only way we can amend the bill is if we get on it,’ said Don Stewart, McConnell’s spokesman. ‘So far, Democrats haven’t chosen to do that.’”
As Leader McConnell said recently, “For . . . weeks now, Democrats have continued to filibuster funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Democrats are filibustering Homeland Security funding for one reason: to defend actions President Obama himself referred to as ‘unwise and unfair,’ and ‘ignoring the law.’
“For . . . weeks, Democrats have prevented the Senate from even considering legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security. Democrats won’t allow the Senate to even debate this funding. Democrats won’t allow the Senate to even consider amendments to this funding.
“Democrats appear willing to do anything and everything they can to prevent the Senate from taking any action to fund Homeland Security. And all to defend ‘unwise and unfair’ overreach.
“This includes Democrats who claim to be against overreach and who claim to be for funding the Department of Homeland Security. And yet, these Democrats continue to filibuster things they claim to want.”
Instead of lies and liberal oriented deceptions over the DHS funding and their prior lock-step agenda of funding President Obama amnesty actions, Democrats will have a chance once more to actually take up this bill. Note the House bill fully funds DHS operations but doe not vote to support President Obama's amnesty actions which at this "moment in time" have been ruled as unconstitutional by a District Judge. Democrats can vote to simply take up the bill and then publicly publicly promote amendments to support and fund Obama's illegal Amnesty actions and to fund the department they keep saying they want to fund.
After three filibusters in a row, now is a good time for Democrat senators to vote to do something, instead of voting to block everything to protect (i.e. cover over) the illegal actions of the president.
