Congress Prepares To Raise Gas Taxes
by Phil Kerpen, Contributing Author: Get Ready.
A bipartisan group in the House led by Republican Jim Renacci of Ohio and Democrat Bill Pascrell of New Jersey have proposed a bill that would impose massive increases in the federal gas tax.
This bill would create a bipartisan task force, just like the Super Committee that failed in 2011. Its tax hike recommendations would get special expedited treatment in Congress. And if it fails to make recommendations, the gas tax would nearly double automatically.
Sound crazy? Yes -- but we have to take it seriously because it's being pushed by a huge array of big business and big labor groups led by the U.S. Chamber and the AFL-CIO.
This new House proposal comes on top of an existing Senate proposal from Republican Bob Corker of Tennessee and Democrat Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who want to raise the gas tax 12 cents a gallon.
We have a better idea. The federal gas tax was supposed to be used to construct the interstate highway system and then sunset in 1969. Three quarters of highway spending is already funded at the state of local level. Let's end the federal gas tax completely and give states control without sending billions of dollars to Washington to be run through a huge bureaucracy before being sent back with all kinds of strings attached.
We need to stop proposals like Renacci-Pascrell and Corker-Murphy that would move in the wrong direction. Please click here to tell Congress to vote NO on any federal Gas Tax Hike!
Wage growth has been stagnant for several years, and higher gas taxes would take back the financial relief families are finally feeling as prices at the pump have eased.
We simply must stop this pending bipartisan disaster.
Thank you in advance for taking action!
