Bubble Boy
by Gary Bauer, Contributing Author: Is the president really as isolated from reality as he sounded last night? I could write pages analyzing every misleading and inaccurate comment. But I'll focus on just a few.
Foreign Policy - Obama's contention that America is more respected around the world today than it was before he took office is so bizarre it raises questions about his grasp of reality. The only countries we have better relations with are Iran and Cuba -- and it has been entirely on their terms.
If all that mattered was making communist and Islamist dictators happy, any previous president could have lifted sanctions on Iran and Cuba. But for decades, Democrats and Republicans alike maintained consistent policies until Obama caved on much that matters to America.
Leadership - Obama said, "The people of the world do not look to Beijing or Moscow to lead?--?they call us." In fact, countries are calling Moscow.
The Saudis are furious with Obama's surrender to Iran and are threatening to develop their own nuclear weapons. While Obama is cutting deals with the ayatollah, the Arab League is condemning Iran's "meddling."
Obama said we were exercising leadership in Syria. But under his "leadership," he drew a red line and then ran from it. Iran and Russia are taking the lead in Syria. While he talks about leadership, his lack of action contributed to 250,000 dead and generated millions of migrants who are now destabilizing Europe.
By the way, the Iranians emasculated Obama yet again yesterday. Just hours before his address, the Islamic Republic of Iran seized two American naval vessels and took ten sailors hostage.
Think about that timing! An Iranian general said the seizure of our ships was a warning to Congress against imposing new sanctions for Iran's illegal nuclear missile tests. Our sailors were released this morning, but only after the administration reportedly apologized.
Clearly, the Iranian regime neither respects nor fears this president. So much for Obama's leadership.
Terrorism - Polls show that Americans are most concerned about the threat of radical Islamic terrorism, but Obama was dismissive of the danger. ISIS doesn't represent WWIII or an existential threat, he said. That was just another version of his "junior varsity" remark, and a lot of smart people, including the pope, disagree.
What Obama refuses to admit is that there is a fundamentalist revival going on throughout the Islamic world. We keep hearing that ISIS is recruiting, especially in the West. How is that?
The number of people willing to blow themselves up is growing. The chances of radical Islamists getting weapons of mass destruction are growing.
Our Military - The president praised our military men and women as the finest in the world. That was one thing we could all agree about. Sadly, the same can't be said of their commander in chief.
The U.S. military is strained. The Army is the smallest it has been since Pearl Harbor. The Navy has been shrunk to WWI levels. The Pentagon has been turned into a politically correct playground for social experimentation.
The Economy - Obama took credit for the growing economy, but this is the worst economic recovery in history. Normally, the economy roars back from a deep recession, but he slowed this recovery with onerous regulations and Obamacare.
More Lectures - Yet again, Obama lectured the American people about our alleged bigotry for "scapegoating people who don't pray like us." He added, "When politicians insult Muslims, when a mosque is vandalized . . . it betrays who we are as a country."
His lectures are offensive. There is no country in the world that has been more welcoming and tolerant of Muslims, especially when it is in the middle of a war against those who kill us in the name of Islam.
There has been no reported significant increase in hate crimes against Muslims since 9/11, and the number of mosques in America has doubled since then. Obama should be congratulating the American people for their tolerance, not condemning them for their alleged lack of it.
FBI statistics suggest that hate crimes against Jews are up, but he was silent about that. There is a genocide against Christians taking place in the Middle East, but he was silent about that.
The president seems to think that bacon on the door of a mosque is a federal offense, a hate crime. But his efforts to force Catholic nuns to support abortion is my definition of a hate crime.
Partisanship - Obama said he regretted being unable to change the tone of partisanship in Washington. For a moment, I thought he was doing a standup comedy routine. Surely, he must be joking. Obama is responsible for the much of the rancor and hyper-partisanship!
The president and his allies accused opponents of Obamacare of not wanting people to have health insurance. If you opposed his wasteful stimulus spending, you hated school teachers and firemen. He compared those who opposed the Iranian nuclear deal to the terrorist-sponsoring mullahs of Iran.
Even before he took the oath of office, he excoriated Americans who believe in God and who exercise their Second Amendment rights as "bitter." If you don't believe in open borders and vetting those who come into the country, you're "un-American."
If you believe marriage is between a man and woman, the president essentially compared you to a KKK member, even though he claimed to have the same position just a few years ago. And if you believe unborn baby girls should be protected under the law, the president says you're waging "war on women."
But in the interest of being fair and balanced, here's one good thing about the president's State of the Union address: It was his last!
