Protect Religious Liberty

by Tim Chapman: All Americans have a constitutional right to religious liberty. But that freedom is under attack from the left.

No one should demand that the government coerce others into participating in activities that violate their deeply held religious beliefs. Congress has a chance to take a bold stand to protect your constitutional right by passing the First Amendment Defense Act (H.R.2802) -- a bill aimed at protecting the religious freedom of individuals, churches, and family businesses.

All Americans should remain free to live and act in the public square according to their sincerely held religious beliefs, even those which inform their views of marriage, without fear of government persecution. The First Amendment ensures that the federal government has an obligation to protect people on both sides of this issue from discrimination. Sadly, the religious freedoms of millions of Americans are increasingly under attack, from both radical leftist groups and liberals within all levels of government. With FADA, Congress has an opportunity to take the lead in declaring that individuals and nonprofit institutions like local churches cannot be punished or prosecuted because they do not support the redefinition of marriage.

And, I have great news. Momentum is growing for Congress to take a bold stand to protect religious liberty.

But we need your help to take it make it a reality. 161 Republican Representatives have signed on as cosponsors to the First Amendment Defense Act! -- a bill aimed at protecting the religious freedom of individuals, churches, and family businesses.

Led by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Representative Raul Labrador (R-ID), the First Amendment Defense Act would prevent the government from discriminating against individuals and groups by denying tax exemptions, grants, contracts, licenses, or certifications based on their belief that marriage is between a man and a woman.

Heritage Action is hard at work to ensure that the First Amendment Defense Act becomes the law of the land. Our team on Capitol Hill is adding cosponsors to the bill and securing commitments from lawmakers every day.
