Why Trump is Good for the GOP
Think of it as a spring cleaning. By opting for Trump, Republican voters are throwing out the deeply unpopular military adventurism and nation-building dreams of the Bush Republicans and returning the focus to problems here at home. Gone, too, is the support for the international free trade deals and open borders that may be good for business interests but have left most Americans very nervous about their future. Trump also appears to have broken the stranglehold social conservatives have had on the party’s primary process.
Senator Marco Rubio, the most prominent representative of the old GOP ways still in the presidential race, declared on CNN earlier this week, “If we nominated Donald Trump, it will be the end of the modern Republican Party.” Trump’s victories and Rubio’s anemic performance on Super Tuesday are further proof that that’s exactly what Republican voters have in mind.
Consider, after all, that GOP voters have long been unhappy with their representation in Washington, D.C. Only 34% of Republicans consider it a positive description to compare a candidate to the last GOP president, George W. Bush. Eighty-six percent (86%) of GOP voters are angry at the current Republican-led Congress. Yet the party’s leadership is stunned by Trump’s electoral success, suggesting that they hadn’t a clue what was brewing out there among the rank-and-file voters.
A less ideological party and one that is more attractive to a wider spectrum of voters are the likely results of the Trump revolution, something Republicans are sure to benefit from in the future while Democrats still wallow in the past.
