How We Defeat Regulatory Tyranny: REINing In Red Tape
by Phil Kerpen, Contributing Author: This morning I was on CNBC fielding questions on Donald Trump’s recent economic policy speech.
When the host asked me what I thought of Donald Trump’s plans for regulatory reform, I said that his proposed halt on regulations “is appropriate after the explosion of regulations we’ve seen over the past several years. Total regulatory compliance costs are now about $15,000 per household, they’re approaching $2 trillion in total.”
Then I pointed out that Trump “supports the REINS Act, which puts Congress back in the decision loop.”
It was great to have the opportunity to discuss the REINS Act on national television, because the REINS Act truly is the solution to regulatory tyranny.
For the past 7 and a half years, Obama has ruled with his pen and phone by following a simple formula:
Step 1: A federal agency housed under the Executive Branch (such as the EPA) will write and implement regulations.
Step 2: If Congress passes a bill to STOP the new regulations, Obama will veto it. Using this process, President Obama has managed to circumvent Congress while enacting job-crushing liberal economic policies across the federal government.
The REINS Act will stop Obama’s regulatory regime because the law mandates that all costly regulations must be passed by Congress, or they CANNOT take effect.
Under Obama, our regulatory process has been turned completely upside down. Our constitutional system was designed for laws to originate from duly elected members of Congress, not from unaccountable bureaucrats.
Here’s the good news: In addition to Donald Trump supporting the REINS Act, the REINS Act has already been passed in the House of Representatives!
