Debate Night, Hillary's Hypocrisy, Protests Continue
by Gary Bauer, Contributing Author: Debate Night - The vice presidential candidates face off tonight in their one and only debate. Indiana Governor Mike Pence and Virginia Senator Tim Kaine will appear together at Longwood University in central Virginia. All of the major networks will cover the debate, which begins at 9:00 p.m. ET.
Obviously no one knows what will happen ahead of time. The evening could be particularly difficult if the moderator, Elaine Quijano of CBS News, behaves like Lester Holt and peppers Pence with hostile questions while lobbing soft balls at Kaine.
As this is the only vice presidential debate, it is worth taking stock of the two candidates. I think any objective analysis would easily conclude that Governor Pence was a grand slam home run selection by Donald Trump.
As for Tim Kaine, he has really been a non-entity for Hillary Clinton in terms of what he brought to the Democrat ticket. I know that presidential campaigns are always about the top spot, obviously. But let's face it, for Democrats it's all about Hillary and electing the first female president.
I guarantee you that all of her Fortune 500 CEO supporters have taken advantage of the normal, well-defined provisions of the tax code, provisions which she is now blasting Donald Trump for using. I guarantee you that they paid only the minimum amount of taxes they had to pay. If they have been in business any length of time, with its inevitable ups and downs, all of them have had years with no tax liability due to business losses.
Given Clinton's raw condemnation of Trump's legal use of the tax code, Hillary needs to be asked whether that condemnation extends to George Soros, Warren Buffett and her other corporate donors who are all in for crony capitalism.
Moreover, is Hillary suggesting that we should repeal the deduction for net operating losses, which affects about one million taxpayers a year? A lot of business owners and investors should be worried about the left's latest line of attack.
Protests Continue - Another liberal Democrat disrespected our men and women in uniform last week. As you know, there has been a whole string of professional athletes, virtually all of them liberal Democrats, disrespecting the police. It has spread to city councils around the country where liberal Democrats are disrespecting the flag.
For the past three years, the New York Knicks basketball team has held a training camp at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Last week, Joakim Noah, a Knicks center, declined an invitation to attend a dinner with West Point cadets. In fact, Noah was uncomfortable the entire time he was at West Point.
He told reporters, "It's hard for me to understand why we have to go to war, why kids have to kill kids around the world. So I have mixed feelings about being here. . ."
West Point responded to Noah's protest. In a statement the academy said: "The U.S. Military Academy at West Point develops leaders of character for the defense of our nation. We are disappointed and feel Mr. Noah's choice of West Point to make a statement is inappropriate because of the great sacrifice that has originated from this institution over our nation's history."
In contrast, New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham went out of his way to shake hands with every man and woman in uniform who presented a giant American flag on the field at last night's game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Beckham said afterwards, "For someone to sacrifice everything that they have for others -- just the concept of it -- it gives me chills. . . They sacrifice everything. It's unselfish."
In tonight's debate, Tim Kaine should be asked whether he supports fellow liberal Democrats expressing their disrespect for our flag and the police. They have a right to protest. That's not the question. Does the Clinton/Kaine ticket support the position they are taking or does it condemn it?

As this is the only vice presidential debate, it is worth taking stock of the two candidates. I think any objective analysis would easily conclude that Governor Pence was a grand slam home run selection by Donald Trump.
- Pence helped build the confidence of values voters for Trump.
- He has great relationships with Republicans on Capitol Hill and his fellow GOP governors around the country, many of whom did not support Trump during the primaries. Pence has helped unite the party.
- Pence has defended Donald Trump and his policies, and presented the conservative message with a positive, Reaganesque demeanor.
- Every time they are together, Donald Trump sees Mike's faith in action and the strength of his character. I know the Pence and Trump families have prayed together. Largely because of Gov. Pence, Trump has become acquainted with all of the leading figures in the pro-life, pro-family movement.
- I believe, again due to Mike Pence's influence, that Donald Trump has a stronger pro-life agenda than any other Republican presidential candidate in recent elections. Donald Trump is promising to appoint pro-life judges, something George W. Bush never promised. Trump is promising to stop taxpayer-funding of abortion and expand religious liberty by repealing IRS restrictions that muzzle pastors and churches.
As for Tim Kaine, he has really been a non-entity for Hillary Clinton in terms of what he brought to the Democrat ticket. I know that presidential campaigns are always about the top spot, obviously. But let's face it, for Democrats it's all about Hillary and electing the first female president.
- I suppose Kaine helps make it more likely that Virginia will be in the Clinton column on election night, but the state has trended left in recent years.
- Some believe Clinton picked Kaine in order help her ticket with white men, but there is little evidence he is helping with that demographic. Meanwhile, Clinton is struggling with Millennial and minority voters.
- Kaine does speak fluent Spanish (expect a demonstration tonight), which he learned as a missionary. So perhaps Hillary thought he could help with outreach to Hispanic and faith-based voters. But whatever draw he had to those communities is likely offset by Hillary's refusing to select a Hispanic running mate in addition to the Democrat ticket's extreme positions on values issues.
