The Rodney Dangerfield Presidency
by Dr. Jack Sternberg, Contributing Author: When it comes to President Donald Trump, “I don’t get no respect” sums up how he has been treated by Democrats, the Left, the Media and even some Republicans.
I know, I know, so before you can say it I will. Trump has brought upon himself a lot of the complaints, accusations and problems he is accused of. But, part of the difference between Democrats and Republicans are that we Republicans and/or Conservatives are willing to acknowledge his errors and mistakes while still believing in his agenda, his plans for America and that he will succeed in implementing these policies. This compares to the 100% approval that President Obama received from his fellow Democrats and the Main Stream Media. It seemed as if they never found anything he did or didn’t do to be a problem. To them, he was the most perfect President in the history of America. He could do no wrong. They acted like he was perfect.
So, why do I call President Trump the Rodney Dangerfield President?
It seems to me that no matter what he accomplishes, they will never acknowledge that he has any successes (or at best minimize these successes immediately followed by something negative). He could start every speech with, “I don’t get no respect” despite his obvious accomplishments. Continually, even the good or potentially great things he is doing are trivialized by his opposition or downright attacked as bad. All they look for is some word or sentence to exaggerate into a major negative.
For example, from the left, he has “gotten no respect” recently for:- His trip to Saudi Arabia where leaders from fifty Arab/Muslim countries attended and enthusiastically applauded his strong, very Presidential speech. These leaders seem to acknowledge that he has retaken America’s leadership role in the world and welcome it. No other President has ever accomplished such a meeting.
- His trip to Israel where he emphatically declared America’s friendship and kinship with the only true Democracy in the Middle East. Where he pledged to back Israel against its enemies, sending a strong message to Israel’s opposition.
- In addition, he met with Mahmoud Abbas, in an attempt to bring together Israel and the Palestinians, for talks toward peace. Now both sides seem to be more willing to negotiate than they have been in years. I believe his strong position towards Israel and his negotiating ability has been instrumental in this new endeavor
- He met with the Pope and the two seemed to get along well.
- He met with NATO in Brussels. He made them understand that they need to pay their fair share for their defense as they had previously agreed upon. He emphasized their need to fight ISIS.
- He is putting forth a real budget that keeps his promise to the American people, to cut spending, reduce the deficit and over time, balance the budget. Many of his proposals may be painful, but no pain, no gain. All President’s before him have been unwilling to do what is necessary, especially when the choices are hard.
- He and the Republicans are working on significant income tax simplification and reform, thereby keeping another promise he previously made to his supporters.
- And of course there is the American Health Care Act due to replace Obamacare. I say all this to accuse Trump’s opposition of intellectual dishonesty. It is fully American and patriotic to point out personal and political errors and flaws in our elected officials but not to just make them up and continuously repeat these accusations. I will also accuse his opposition of downright treachery and lying when it comes to their unsubstantiated (anonymous) accusations, which they try to push off as facts. And the worst is the treasonous, illegal leaks to the press.
What is disingenuous is an unwillingness to acknowledge another’s successes and positive attributes and/or accomplishments. As Rodney Dangerfield would say, “Trump just can’t no respect, ” not even a little, from his opposition.
