President Trump Puts America First - U.S. Exits Paris Climate Accord
ARRA News Service (Updates as Comments Received): Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning issued the following statement praising President Donald Trump for withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris climate accord:"Today, the American people owe a debt of gratitude to President Trump, for putting America first and telling foreign powers no more. No more concessions. No more kowtowing. No more economic suicide pacts. A new day has come of prioritizing American interests on the world stage, and President Trump will be remembered decades from now as setting the U.S. on a new path of prosperity — by leaving the Paris agreement on the ash heap of history where it belongs."
"In exiting the Paris Treaty, President Trump has made good on his campaign pledge to put America first. Obama's bad climate deal endangered the future growth of the U.S. economy and millions of jobs that Americans need to provide for their families, and in leaving the agreement, President Trump has established his own doctrine, that the federal government's first responsibility is to the American people, not to foreign interests. The consequence of the Paris agreement was to simply shift production, growth and jobs to emerging markets overseas when there too many working families that are hurting here at home.
"Fortunately, President Trump has not forgotten that it was working families — in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and across the country in our industrial base — who depend on there being real, good-paying jobs in order to make ends meet. These workers supported him in 2016, and the President's commitment to pull out of the Paris climate accord was one of the most important promises made to the American people, a part of his very reason for being President, which was to stop the bad deals that are killing the American economy.
"Under Paris, the jobs we need to create cannot exist here. Under Paris, we cannot increase manufacturing here and we cannot get coal miners back to work. Under Paris, we cannot expand our power grid and rid ourselves of these self-inflicted regulatory wounds. Paris was an obstacle to getting Americans back to work, and for that reason alone it had to go." Campaign for Working Families President Gary Bauer issued the following statement:"President Trump announced that he was withdrawing the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement. This move fulfills a key campaign promise and, more importantly, was the right decision. I will provide more analysis in tomorrow's report.
"Predictably, the left and its big media allies are reacting to this announcement with hysterical rage, vowing to defeat Republicans who support President Trump's efforts to undo Barack Obama's radical agenda." Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said:“I applaud President Trump and his administration for dealing yet another significant blow to the Obama Administration’s assault on domestic energy production and jobs. President Obama made commitments in this deal based off a costly power plan that we knew at the time was on shaky legal ground. By withdrawing from this unattainable mandate, President Trump has reiterated his commitment to protecting middle class families across the country and workers throughout coal country from higher energy prices and potential job loss.
“Today’s move builds on action Congress took to rebuff then-President Obama’s regulatory rampage, which put American jobs at risk. When the previous administration signed America up for this unattainable mandate, we made it clear we would fight this unilateral action any way we could, and this day could not have happened soon enough. President Trump has once again put families and jobs ahead of left-wing ideology and should be commended for his action.” U.S. Sneator John Boozman (R-AR) said:“Entering into the Paris climate accord was not in America’s best interest and the previous administration should have never taken that action without seeking the Senate’s advice and consent. I commend President Trump for taking the appropriate steps to make a clean exit from it so we can continue to pursue an “all-of-the-above” approach to meeting our energy needs free of the significant litigation risk created by the agreement.
Typical of Obama-era actions, the agreement picked winners and losers. China, an obvious winner, is allowed to operate without making any significant changes. Meanwhile, the U.S., which was expected to make up 21 percent of all emissions reductions while subsidizing the efforts of other countries, was clearly on the losing side.
It is important to stress that a clean exit from the Paris climate accord will not take away the United States’ seat at the table in future discussions, nor will it detract from our efforts to pursue renewable energy solutions. We need to use everything our nation has been blessed with, including wind, solar, renewable biomass and hydropower to diversify our energy portfolio. Emissions-free nuclear must also play a big role. We will continue to make advancements in these areas and that will not stop once the nation withdraws from this agreement.”
