Rep. Scalise, Shot in June, Defends Second Amendment
Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) |
Sitting with his fellow lawmakers who came to his rescue on June 14, Scalise told Fox News's Martha McCallum on Wednesday that he has not changed his mind on the Second Amendment:
"You know, what happened in my case, you had people on site to immediately encounter the shooter and take him down. And that happens everyday in America, where regular citizens that have their own guns because of the Second Amendment protection, are able to defend themselves against criminals."
Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas) said the Second Amendment is not about target shooting or hunting: "The Second Amendment is about an armed people to stand up to tyranny from a government that they would be opposed to. So we need to couch the Second Amendment in its proper light," he said.
It's true that guns, just like automobiles and drugs, can be used improperly, he added.
