Gun Ownership is Up. Violent Crime is Down. Any Questions?
by Duane Lester, All American Blogger: In 2009, more and more Americans became licensed to carry a concealed weapon. According to the “National Instant Criminal Background Check statistics,” there was “an increase of 25 million background checks from a total of 75 million to 100 million initiated by Type 01 federally licensed firearms retailers between April 5, 2007, and April 4, 2009.”
Bill Brassard at Buckeye Firearms Association notes, there was a decline in violent crime in 2009, leading a person to doubt the liberal argument that more guns equal more crime:

Bill Brassard at Buckeye Firearms Association notes, there was a decline in violent crime in 2009, leading a person to doubt the liberal argument that more guns equal more crime:
Preliminary statistics released by the FBI for the first half of 2009 show that violent crime continues a downward trend that began in 2006. The figures show crime falling in all categories–robbery, aggravated assault, motor vehicle thefts, etc.–with murders down a remarkable 10 percent from the previous year.An American uses a firearm defensively every 13 seconds. With more guns on the street in the hands of law abiding citizens, I wonder if that number isn’t lower now.
The FBI statistics undermine a favorite argument of anti-gun groups and some mainstream media that “more guns equal more crime,” especially when you consider that the decrease in violent crime from late 2008 through the first half of 2009 occurred at the same time that firearm sales were surging.
The most popular firearms selling at that time were handguns and modern sporting rifles (AR-style rifles)–two types of firearms that anti-gunners never miss an opportunity to demonize.

A correlation does not equal a cause. Same fallacy applies to abortion and crime.
One could point out there's an obvious correlation between firearms ownership and accidents. The literature stuffed into the box that came with my new Mossberg this Christmas certainly seemed to suggest that is the case.
Hmmm, yea, there "probably" has to be a gun to have a gun accident just like there "probably" has to be a car to have a car accident. Good work!
Even if the world was filled with accident-prone ppl, the right to self-defense still stands.
I used to rob houses when I was an ignorant young man. I promise I would have never went into a house that had a sign that said " Protected by Smith & Wesson". I have to say, you are less likely to be a target if criminals know you own a firearm.
I appreciate your testimony, David.
No problem, I'm writing a book about how I grew up in communities that taught me nothing but a lifestyle of ignorance. I've used the power and wisdom of the Bible to turn my life around and will be traveling with the National Tea Party Express 3 in March speaking on how constitutional principles are the best remedy for the spread of poverty in low income communities and the United States. A right to keep and bare arms is one of those principles. God Bless.
Good for you David, wonderful story and great to hear people who putting their trials to good use!
You should read the book, "More Guns, Less Crime" by economists John Lott. He also wrote "Freedomnomics" Brilliant man. His website is http://johnrlott.blogspot.com/
There was a something on Discovery Channel a few years back; they put a hand gun in with the toys and turned little children lose.
Those who had grown up with weapons in house tried to find an adult to report the gun to and kept others from touching it. Those who had never seen a real gun before played with it.
Education is the key not weapon control. When guns are illegal only the criminals will have them; that means all the people who have done like we do, keep them locked in a gun safe when not being used, will have to give them up.
Karen is correct, I read the study the Discovery Channel story was based on.
People make rational decisions when provided with good information...
And the last thing most people want to do is make decisions based on good solid information.
When I took Marketing was surprised to learn that they don't call it lying they call it puffery; they also taught if you tell people "don't worry" what they will focus on is the word worry. Listen to the nightly news sometime and pay attention to the way they say things, it isn't so much as what they say but the way they say it.
Israel and Switzerland both require every citizen to be trained with and possess a working and loaded gun. Look at their crime and gun safety statistics... they speak for themselves.
MORE GUNS LESS CRIME LOOK FOR IT AT YOUR BOOKSTORE
Criminals are like any other predator; they're not looking for a challenge, but for the easiest target with the least risk. A house with someone in it who may be ready, willing, or maybe even eager in the occasional case, to double-tap a couple of jacketed hollow points or 00 buckshot rounds into your center of mass is not a good profit potential/risk ratio when there is someone else just down the street who is not ready.
I would not hesitate to bust a cap in someones a$$. God Bless you David.
James, LOL. However, one thing I learned becoming an expert military marksman - aim center mass not in someone butt. We always followed Patton's guidance: It is better for their SOB to die for their country than for us to die for ours."
Now, even my wife is prepared with the same guideline.
Gregory is also right. There are no friendlies in a home invasion!
