Passing of Bob Howard - Medal of Honor - Most Heavily Decorated Veteran of the Modern Era
Update: Learn more by listening to Col. Bob Howard's own words at A Hero Among Heroes – Col. Robert L Howard
-------------
Bill Smith, Editor: Having been traveling and preparing for Christmas, I delayed posting about a great American "mustang" who reported for duty with his former comrades. A "mustang" is an enlisted person who goes on to be commissioned an officer. As a staff sergeant, Robert "Bob" Howard served his country in the jungles of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Howard was a Green Beret, Special Forces. His heroic efforts in three individual actions during thirteen months spanning 1967–1968 resulted in his being nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor. However, since the government had used him and other in places and situations being kept secret from those back home, the initial two nominations were downgraded to the Distinguished Service Cross.
Robert Howard as a Sergeant First Class risked his life during a rescue mission in Cambodia on December 30, 1968, while second in command of a platoon-sized Hornet force that was searching for missing American soldier Robert Scherdin, and he was finally awarded the Medal of Honor. He served five tours of duty in Vietnam and was wounded 14 times during one 54-month period during the Vietnam Conflict. He received two Masters degrees during his government career which spanned almost 50 years. Howard retired as a full Colonel in 2006.
According to NBC News, "Howard may be the most highly-decorated American soldier since World War II. His residence was in Texas and he spent much of his free time working with veterans at the time of his death. He also took periodic trips to Iraq to visit active duty troops."
Colonel Robert Howard was awarded many honors for his heroic service, including the Medal of Honor, eight Purple Hearts, four Bronze Stars with Valor, and two Distinguished Service Crosses. Other medals and ribbons and devices were: Defense Superior Service Medal, four Legion of Merits, three Meritorious Service Medals, four Air Medals (one for heroism), Joint Service Commendation, seven Army Commendation Medal(4 for valor), Joint Service Achievement, Army Achievement, Good Conduct Medal with four Good Conduct Loops, National Defense Service Medal, three Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals, Vietnam Service Medal 3 service stars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, three NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, two Presidential Unit Citation (Army), Meritorious Unit Commendation (Army), Navy Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Unit Citation with Palm, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Gold Star, Silver Star (Division and Bronze Star, Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal, Republic of Vietnam Wound Medal, Republic of Vietnam Staff Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Korea Order of National Security Merit, Ranger Tab, Special Forces Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman's Badge, Aircrew Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Air Assault Badge, Expert Marksmanship Badge, Vietnamese Ranger Badge, Vietnamese Master Parachute Badge, Thai Master Parachute Wings, Korean Master Parachute Badge, Thai Balloonist Badge, French Parachutist Badge. Howard died in Waco, Texas on December 23, 2009. He was survived by three children and four grandchildren.
In any other time or era, Bob Howard would have been the recognized hero of the times. As potentially the most decorated hero since WWII, Bob earned his place in history through sacrifice and risking his life for others. It was the anti-war sentiment of the 60's and 70's that blamed the the military and not their government for the American involvement in Vietnam. It was a disgraceful period of time in American history when traitors like Jane Fonda, draft dodgers like Bill Clinton and self aggrandizement seekers like John Kerry would get more credit and fame than those who served their country with honor when called for by their country. Thank you Col. Bob Howard for your service. I pray you have now found a peaceful rest.
Family Security Matters rightly states: "If America does not honor men like Bob Howard, then we have no heart, no soul, no brains left." Watch the following tribute by Brian Williams, a member of the Board of Directors of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.

Bob Howard---American Hero. RIP
Bob, it was an honor to work with you at the Airborne Department at Ft Benning, Ga in 1971. You are now with your boss who hired you Col. Lamar A. Welch, may you both continue the Airborne Spirit until I arrive...SSG (Ret) John Ratliff.
This is the kind of man that American children should look to - not men like Tiger Woods, or Alex Rodriguez, or Michael Jackson, or Michael Jordan, or Brad Pitt. Colonel Howard is a real American hero.
This was a man whose values, ideals, and beliefs this country was built on. Wonder why the media could not broadcast his funeral like they did M Jackson, for example. It is a shame our country values overpaid, spoiled, moral-less actors and athletes more than people like Col Howard who gave so much to his country. God bless Col Howard and his family and all that they sacrificed for this country.
Bless Col Howard and his family. Thank you for your service.
Rest In Peace Sir, may we meet again at the Rallying Point with the Great Ranger in the Sky.

Bob Howard and Roy P Benavidez , extraordinary individuals linked by a common bond,Airborne,Green Beret. These are the men movies should be made of,no writers needed.
He will be guarding the streets of heaven....rest in peace Green Beret!
This guy is a true American hero. A Special Forces soldier and a Ranger. This guy set the example of what an American soldier should strive to be. When I heard of all of his accomplishments and found out he was a Green Beret, it didn't surprise me. I wish I would have had the honor to be in his presence. He will surely be missed.
God bless you sir and thank you for your service. you definitely freed the oppressed and led all the way......ALL THE WAY!
God bless you American Warrior...Semper Fi

Great man, true America Hero. Although Brian Williams is wrong on the Medal of Honor, you can receive as many as they see fit. There are no triple MoH recipients there have been several double MoH's awarded.
I thank Col Bob Howard for his service to this nation. An AMERICAN HERO !! Come on ladies, lets raise our sons like Bob Howard ! Lets stop raising sissies, limp wristed, no backbone, over-weight, out of shape, sit in front of the TV and play video games and eat potato chips and drink kool-aid, this goes for both boys and girls.
Gonna need more soilders like this in war world 3

I had the privelege to be trained by Col. Howard while attending the Special Forces qualification course at camp Mc Kall, NC where he was the commandant. He was without a doubt the toughest man I ever knew. I often think of the things he taught me about being a soldier and how to live my life with honor. I will never forget him, nor will the countless soldiers who's lives he saved. God bless you Colonel!!! You are a true American Hero...
What a man! RIP Hero, Thank you for your service.

GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES ARMY AND ALL OF THE BRANCHES OF THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES - TRULY TRULY I SAY UNTO THEE - A GLOBAL FORCE FOR GOOD, RIGHTEOUSNESS, FREEDOM, DIGNITY, AND DECENCY!!!!!
A real American hero. Semper fi
Damn, is there anything this brave ol' man did NOT do?
The ideals, dedication, respect and plain hard work that this man showed his entire life is something rarely seen today. If more people (not just Americans) could be like him, this world would be a better world. As a 4th generation military veteran, I salute this man, his beliefs, his courage and his life. I only regret that I was never able to meet him and feel the awesome presence that must have poured out of every part of his being. Rest well Col. Williams, you deserve it and much more!
My FATHER DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS WONDERFUL HERO! My father was a Marine, Air Force Pilot, Navy Radar and Radio repairman, and Army Reserves Sgt. HE IS WATCHING THE VIDEOS NOW WITH ME. We are so moved and touched to realize that Such a FINE MAN WAS CREATED AS AN AMERICAN MILITARY HERO IN OUR GRATEFUL LIFETIME! Thank you Lord God Yaweh and Yeshua( JESUS CHRIST) Messiah... FOR placing such a strong, good, smart and heroic man fighting for us and being a role model for our young men in the future for our forevers. Thank you to his parents and siblings and wife and children. Thank you to his troops and his commanders for being be his side fighting the good fight even when the people did not know or the Government care.
