Veterans Day: Just Celebrating is Not Enough
Veterans - Waiting and Waiting They may have to wait longer when money for their assistance has been stolen. |
by Curtis Coleman, Contributing Author: This Sunday, November 11, is Veterans’ Day in America and it will be celebrated as a federal and state holiday on Monday. Veterans’ Day parades, services, memorials and events honoring our veterans will observed beginning today through Monday across the State of Arkansas, including a special service at 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning at the State Capital. Please participate in one near you, and please take your children with you.
But I submit to you that sometimes just celebrating Veterans’ Day is not enough!
When Arkansas’s Home for Veterans in Little Rock falls into such disrepair that veterans can no longer safely live there, just celebrating Veterans Day is not enough.
When the doctor paid to care for our veterans at the Home for Veterans doesn’t even show up for over a year and then walks away without consequence, just celebrating Veterans’ Day is not enough.
When $900,000 belonging to Arkansas veterans is illegally seized and misused by the State, just celebrating is not enough.
When self-employed Arkansas national guardsmen are deployed so often they lose their businesses and there is no assistance from a grateful State, just celebrating is not enough.
And when too many families of veterans say they let their veterans be admitted to a VA hospital only as a matter of last resort, just celebrating is not enough.
These men and women, our mothers and fathers, our sons and daughters put everything on the line for our freedom and for our Country. We will celebrate this weekend because of their service and their sacrifice. But just celebrating is not enough.
