Let’s Talk 'White Privilege', Shall We?
by Norm Beznoska Jr., Contributing Author: Lately, we have been subjected to the latest “craze” from the Left by a feckless few in Academia, the media and of course, the White House. Blinded by the brightness of the color “White”, these rabid apologists for income inequality and social injustice, blame all the ills of the world on “White Privilege”, the new piñata’ of the Left.
Doing Mea Culpas, wearing hair shirts, wringing their hands and apologizing for being “white”, may make good copy for their friends in the liberal news media, and the current occupant of the White House, but is in itself, a form of ‘reverse discrimination’. One that makes blood shoot from the eyes of “white privileged” working people everywhere and deserves a rebuttal.
Let’s talk about “White Privilege” shall we?
I was “privileged” to be created in the image and likeness of a loving God, (Gen.1:27), One who “created my inmost being; knitting me together in my mother's womb.”(Psalm 139:13), just as He did every other human being. Not just “privileged White human beings”.
I was “privileged” to be born of “white privileged’ parents who believed in ‘God, Country, Family’ and the ethics of working hard, praying hard, studying hard and playing by the rules to become a successful and contributing member of society. My father, a Cleveland Police Officer for 37 years, worked in the slag pits in Cleveland, OH during his teen years during the depression for 75 cents a day, to help put a little food on my grandparents table. There was NO Unemployment or Disability pay, Food stamps or EBT cards; no Free utilities or Section 8 housing, no SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), or WIC ((Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, Children).
“White Privilege”? Tell that to my Mother, who, at age four lived with different Aunts when her Mother died and Father left home. Yet, these two beautiful “White Privileged” parents of mine, found a way to graduate from high school and work their entire adult lives, never complaining, but creating a wonderful (not rich) life for our family. And surprise, Mr. Obama and company; they did it without any government handouts, or redistribution of anyone’s income!
I am “Privileged” to be able to work for the past 64-years of my life; first as a paper boy at age Nine, delivering the Cleveland Press and Cleveland Plain Dealer for pennies day, all while serving 6:30am daily Mass at St. Henry’s Catholic church and attending grade school.
At age 14, I was “privileged” to work with two "Black" men (who also taught me the joy of hard work) as a landscaper helper for 50 cents an hour, after school and during the summer. I was also “privileged” to work my way through St. Ignatius High School, packing groceries at Heinen’s for 75 cents an hour, which paid for my tuition and a used car.
After graduating High School, I was “privileged” at age 17, to enlist in the United States Navy, serving my country honorably for 6 and 1/2 years, advancing to the rank of Petty Officer First Class; earning an average of $3.00 an hour. After receiving my Honorable Discharge from the Navy, I was once again ‘privileged” to obtain a full-time job with IBM, working during the day for WOW, a whole $5.50 an hour, while attending John Carroll University at night for ten years. I was “privileged” to have been downsized twice, taking a substantial cut in salary; and having a total knee and hip replacement after starting my own consulting company at age 67.
In the 1970s, I was “privileged” to meet a wonderful woman, whom I have been married to for the past 40 years, and has worked for 29 of those years, while raising three very productive and successful “White Privileged” children. A daughter who is a VP with a local bank; a son who is a Naval Reserve Officer on his second deployment (and was “privileged to have conquered cancer) and works as a Financial Analyst in civilian life; and another daughter who is an Orthodontist. All three were “privileged” to have worked their way through high school and college getting to where they are today, productive parents and, law abiding citizens of our country.
Like millions of other “White Privileged” people, we believe like the Bible, in helping the poor, the sick, and the truly needy! We work to bring glory to God. However, God does not tell His people to harvest everything and then simply give food to the poor. Instead, He tells them to leave enough of the grain to allow the poor to work for themselves (Leviticus 23:22). Work has a way of giving all of us a sense of purpose, productivity, and dignity. Government handouts do not.
So, to those feckless few and their progressive allies in academia, the media and government, who whine about “income inequality”, and spew about “social injustice” and damn near everything else, I say with all due respect: Shut Up and Pay Attention! The world and our country doesn’t owe you a living or anything but the ‘opportunity’ to get a good education and a job, IF you want it bad enough. Quit making excuses for yourselves and blaming others for your station in life. Your boogey man, “White Privilege”, has not held back countless millions of others, who came to America often destitute and penniless, yet made huge successes of themselves and their children.
“Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty.” Proverbs 28:19. Amen!
