1,621,614 Letters to Capitol Hill Urging Congress to Stop ObamaNet
Washington, D.C. — Free-market advocacy group American Commitment announced today that in the month immediately following the February 26 Federal Communications Commission (FCC) partisan vote to adopt President Obama's plan to regulate the Internet, 540,538 citizens mobilized by American Commitment sent 1,621,614 letters to Congress demanding either a bipartisan compromise solution to stop Obama's plan or appropriations language to defund it. The letters went to each citizen’s member of Congress and both U.S. Senators.
"We've never seen such an intense citizen response in opposition to a federal regulatory action," said Phil Kerpen, president of American Commitment. "It's clear that Americans are outraged that the free-market Internet they know and love is on the brink of being reduced to a public utility, and they are watching Congress very closely. They are joining us in demanding legislative action to stop Obama’s plan to regulate the Internet."
In an interview with Politics 365 last week Congressional Black Caucus Chairman G.K. Butterfield became the first Democrat to break with the White House and call for Congress to act, saying: "They've made a rule change under Title II of the Communications Act that’s going to regulate broadband just like utility and phone companies, and we need to get Congress involved. Congress needs to come in and establish broadband policy going forward."
In testimony to the House Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees the FCC last week, Republican FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai asked for his own agency to be defunded, saying: "Congress should forbid the Commission from using any appropriated funds to implement or enforce the plan the FCC just adopted to regulate the Internet."
"These two breaking developments show the deluge of citizen letters are having a profound effect," Kerpen said. "One way or the other, the American people will not allow President Obama's plan to reduce the Internet to a public utility to stand."
Citizens who wish to join this effort can still do so here:
