History of Freedom
Bob McDowell, Contributing Author: Early this month we noted that 800 years ago that English nobility "persuaded" their King to sign the Magna Carta. When I was in school, we were taught that this document was the very first effort to provide, in writing, freedom guarantees to the non-ruling citizens of any nation. Previously, any freedom existed at the whims of the ruling elite and their were no guaranteed rights of person, property, or advancement from their lowly status.
In my opinion, this anniversary should be formally recognized in some way as it was the same freedoms granted and guaranteed that the English King in the 1700 was denying to the colonists in the North American Continent. The usurpation of freedom were in detail enumerated in the words of our own Declaration of Independence. This document, dated July 4, 1776, states the violations of the then King of England against the rights of the British citizens living in the ‘American Colonies’ as the valid reasons for the renunciation of their ties to Great Britain and establishment of a new nation to be known as the “United States of America”.
Subsequently, delegates wrote and the states ratified on September 13, 1788 our U.S. Constitution for our nation which guaranteed the GOD given rights to all it’s citizens. Not to my knowledge, in the history of the World, has there been another such a nation. Nor has one been so eloquently stated been founded since. In fact, the history of the World has been one of slavery and brutality since there was any recording of such.
The closest was the original Jewish state of Israel. However, its history is replete, as detailed in the Old Testament, with misconduct by rulers. The citizens had been warned by a prophet that a king would do just like those of the other nations around them. But they demanded a king. That did not work out well then, and absolute monarchies have not worked for the benefit and freedom of their people since.
Numerous misguided American leaders have attempted to institute a “Democracy” type government in or on other nations rescued from despotic leadership, They had not had lasting success. They failed to recognize that a population never exposed to God given rights and freedom can not readily accept or adapt to it. Freedom can only exist when the people are educated, informed (truthfully), and honestly involved.
Although the following quote has been attributed to various people, it is interesting to note how accurate it details the past and how much further we have progressed along that predicted line: "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the Public Treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the Public Treasury with a result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy always followed by dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years."
In the United States, we have been given the most wonderful basic law documents to operate our REPUBLIC by dedicated Convention delegates who had experienced the War for Independence. In my opinion, this Constitution has been too often modified by amendments poorly conceived and/or, as is now being done regularly, just ignored to the detriment of We The People who are over-taxed, over-regulated, and disrespected by our Government and its agencies.
Reflecting on the upcoming Independence Day, July 4, it is long over due for the majority to stand up and demand that politicians and bureaucrats follow the laws, reign in the agencies issuing the myriad of ‘regulations’ having the force of law, and return to the principles of our founding documents and to the “rule of law” on which we were founded.
This must begin at the lowest political level, the school boards and city and county governments. A big step would be returning God into the schools and media.
In closing, I wish you a very reflective Independence Day!
