On Memorial Day I Remembered . . .
. . . Hanoi Jane Fonda is Still a Traitor!
by John C. Velisek, Contributing Author: Did anyone expect to hear from “Hanoi” Jane Fonda again? Of course, in order to slink away from society and retire to a cave, Fonda would have to leave the fawning press and the liberals who think of her as an icon.
It may be too long to remember what this “Woman of the Century” did to prisoners in North Vietnam’s Hanoi Hilton. But some of us who were there will never forget and never let others forget. Jane Fonda was and is a traitor to this country.
Unfortunately, those born in the 70’s don’t know and it is a safe bet that our educational system will not mention it.
For those who do not remember or who do not know, the burden that this woman put on our fighting men during Vietnam began the downfall of the American psyche. In some sense we have not recovered from that pivotal moment in our nation’s military history.
This “peace activist” as Fonda was called at the time, visited the Hanoi Hilton and saw prisoners such as Jerry Driscoll - later the Commandant of the USAF survival school -beaten and clubbed with a wooden baton by the prison commandant.
The families of the men in the Hanoi Hilton did not know if their loved ones were alive or dead. They only knew that husbands, sons and fathers were “missing in action.”
During Fonda’s visit the prisoners developed a plan of passing their Social Security numbers to Fonda on little slips of paper. They did this as Fonda asked them questions like “aren’t you sorry you bombed babies?” and “aren’t you grateful for the humane treatment you receive.” After the cameras stopped rolling and the ceremony was over, Fonda handed all the little slips of paper to the camp commandant. Three men died as a result of her unforgivable treachery.
“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert called Fonda an “icon of [her] generation.” Did Colbert not know the history of this traitorous woman, or did he not care?
Does he think the fact that she married a wealthy man and started a business that is doing well is all that matters? It certainly doesn’t mitigate against all she has done, least of all the brainless betrayal of desperate prisoners who lost their lives because they put their trust in a “fellow American.”
Fonda now says that she was wrong in Vietnam and that she is sorry. But her apology does not make a difference. Those men are gone, their families still grieve and there are some of us who will never forget or forgive.
Jane Fonda should have faced a charge of treason. Upon conviction her life should have been forfeit for the betrayal which cost the lives of American prisoners. At least, my fellow warriors and I can take solace in the knowledge that Fonda will burn in Hell for the evil she has done.
We won’t forget and we won’t let others forget.
