Cruz Goes To Cleveland, Pence Takes The Stage
by Gary Bauer, Contributing Author: The 2016 RNC Convention: Donald Trump, Jr. was very impressive and may have his own political future ahead!
His remarks yesterday went a long way, in my opinion, toward cementing Trump's connection with Middle America and the blue-collar workers who gave Ronald Reagan two landslide victories. Just consider this excerpt:"You want to know what kind of president he'll be? Let me tell you how he ran his businesses. . . He didn't hide out behind some desk in an executive suite, he spent his career with regular Americans.
"He hung out with the guys on construction sites pouring concrete and hanging sheetrock. He listened to them and he valued their opinions as much and often more than the guys from Harvard and Wharton locked away in offices away from the real work.
"He's recognized the talent and the drive that all Americans have. He's promoted people based on their character, their street smarts and their work ethic, not simply paper or credentials. . . His true gift as a leader is that he sees the potential in people that they don't even see in themselves. . ."
Actress and farmer Kimberlin Brown delivered a very powerful speech about the struggles of working women and small business owners.
Dr. Ben Carson spoke eloquently about our values and warned delegates and voters about the danger of dismissing this election. Here's what he said:"Now, we must also be wary of the narrative that's being advanced by some in our party. The notion that a Hillary Clinton administration wouldn't be that bad, the effects would only be temporary. That it would only last for four, and at most, eight years.
"They're not using their God-given brain to think about what they're saying because it won't be for eight years because she will be appointing people who will have an effect on us for generations, and America may never recover from that. . .
"She would appoint Supreme Court justices, she would appoint federal judges, and that would have a deleterious effect on what happens for generations to come."
Another highlight of the evening was the speech by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Four years ago, Christie was a keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention, but that speech wasn't one of his better moments. Rather than promoting the nominee, he spent a lot of time promoting himself.
Last night was very different. Like Rudy Giuliani, Christie put on his old hat as a former prosecutor and proceeded to effectively prosecute the case against Hillary Clinton. He had the crowd chanting, "Lock Her Up! Lock Her Up!"
Cruz Goes To Cleveland
On my way to Cleveland yesterday, I had some time to speak with Senator Ted Cruz and his lovely wife, Heidi. It was a private conversation, but it was clear that if he chooses to, he has a great political future ahead.
Senator Cruz will address the convention tonight, and I am certain he will lay out a traditional conservative message and vision for the nation, rooted in the principles that guided Ronald Reagan.
I hope he will say the one sentence that may be the most difficult for him, which is this: "Donald Trump is the nominee of our party, and I will stand with him to make sure Hillary Clinton is denied entrance to the Oval Office so she cannot further transform the United States into something we don't recognize."
Pence Takes The Stage
Tonight, my good friend Indiana Governor Mike Pence will take the stage and address the delegates as the Republican Party's vice presidential nominee.
Those of you frustrated by arrogant, self-serving Washington politicians -- and who isn't?! -- will find Mike to be down-to-earth, humble and refreshing. I can't say enough good things about his character and integrity. In fact, it has been reported that the worst thing the Trump campaign found in his vetting file was a speeding ticket from decades ago!
