Relax: A Moment in Time Doesn't Determine What Will Happen in November
Presidential campaigns have very high points, very low points and lots of slogging in between. I can certainly tell you about that. And the past week saw more than a few rough spots for Donald Trump, whose failure to be measured in the things he said gave his media enemies the perfect excuse to paint him as erratic and out of control.
And as Rob told you on Wednesday, this led to media speculation that the Republican Party might be discussing a Plan B in the event Trump himself decided to drop out of the race.
Now let’s get real: That is not going to happen. You may not like any number of things about Donald Trump, but the man is not a quitter. He also understands something that no one in the media nor in the political realm do not: You haven’t lost because you’ve been momentarily knocked back. Trump has been down in many situations in his life, and he usually comes back to win. He’s smarter than people give him credit for, and he understands how to assess situations and make adjustments so he can achieve a goal.
The situation with the Khans is a perfect example. As Dan said on Tuesday, this was a perfect example of a Democrat/media ambush. The Democrats trot out some people that they know the media will treat as beyond criticism, have them attack Trump, and then when Trump responds in a less-than-measured way, they’ve got a storyline they can ride for days. “Trump attacks Gold Star Family!”
That’s not really the way it happened at all, but this was a trap and Trump fell into it. The good news is that the media can’t report nothing but the Khan story between now and November. Trump has plenty of time to learn, adjust and move on from this.
His challenge right now is to deal with the impression being create by the Clinton campaign and their media allies – that Trump is erratic, dangerous and unprepared for the presidency. He has to show the voters that this is not the truth about him. Voters know that Hillary Clinton is corrupt and dishonest, and I don’t think there are many who really want her to be president. But they see her as someone who’s been “in the arena” and knows the ropes, and if they think the alternative is someone who can’t control himself, they may well decide that the corrupt liar is the only safe choice.
That would be a terrible outcome for two reasons. First, Donald Trump is nothing like what he’s being made out to be. He’s a rational thinker and a responsible decision-maker. Because he does not behave in the way the political media thinks candidates are supposed to behave, they don’t know what to make of him and sometimes they paint him as out-and-out crazy. He needs to convince the voters of the man he really is. He is not going to convince them through the media. They’re in the tank for Hillary. He needs to go straight to the voters and show them who he is.
The second reason this would be terrible is that there is nothing safe and sensible about electing Hillary Clinton. Not only is she dishonest and corrupt, she’s also a radical left-winger who has no regard for the Constitution – as if that doesn’t sound familiar.
By the way, because Hillary is one of the worst candidates ever to seek the presidency, there is plenty of time for her to make horrible mistakes as well. In fact, I can pretty much guarantee you she will. You won’t hear the media hyperventilate about her mistakes like they do about Trump’s, but she will make them.
We have a long way to go here. Trump needs to be more careful and measured in how he handles situations, and he needs to recognize when a trap is being set for him. I think he will make the adjustments necessary to do well with these situations in the future. And for the country’s sake, he’d better.

Herman Cain you are Right!!! And you fell for a trap with your own 9-9-9 plan. Should have stuck with the Fair Tax that maximizes GDP growth and sustains it and eliminates one plank of the Communist Manifesto. The evil class warfare spawn of the income tax. And you better speak with Trump as Reagan went with the three tier income tax brackets scheme eliminating 15,000 pages of the corruption filled IRS Code. Fast forward from 1980 to now and the IRS Code has regained the 15,000 pages and thousands more. Because politicians can never be trusted to leave reform alone. Only the Fair Tax makes that happen. Only the Fair Tax!!!
