Do American's Misuse & Abuse The 1st Amendment
by Jim Blockey, Contributing Author: The National Football League is cowardly allowing football players to disrespect our National Anthem and flag all in the name of freedom of speech. I say just because you can stretch the meaning of the 1st Amendment and say you have the right to do so, does not necessarily mean you should. Using this same reasoning racism is protected by this amendment also. I wonder how the NFL or any other corporation would react to racist comments or actions by their employees.
In Jurassic Park, Jeff Goldblum said, "Just because you can, does not mean you should." Now granted this was in a fictional movie in reference to making dinosaurs; however it is a great statement and expresses the abuse and misuse of the 1st Amendment. Simply because you are allowed to do something, does that mean you should do it?
No corporation would allow any of its employees to use racist slurs or act in a racist manner, so why allow them to defame or disgrace America. These corporations have the right to their own policies. The NFL in their supreme ignorance would not allow the Dallas Cowboys to have an emblem on their helmets supporting the police officers who were murdered in Dallas; so obviously, though hypocritical, the NFL does have their own policy.
John Adams told our military on October 11, 1798, "Our Constitution is made only for a religious and moral people; it is wholly inadequate for the use of any other." What is currently taking place in America is why Adams made this declaration. Immoral people will turn their backs and burn our flag; they will lie or manipulate the truth; will urinate on the cross and call it art, all in the name of freedom of speech and expression.
George Washington expressed this in his farewell address to the country, "Reason and experience, both forbid us to believe we can have a national morality without religious principles." Our Founding Fathers believed the Constitution would not survive without a moral citizenry, because if we lose that we forget about the consequences of our actions.
Our children are greatly influenced by athletes and movie stars, they love to emulate them. Now we have high school athletes and 10 year old Pop Warner football players showing that same disrespect to the flag. What will be the consequences of this? These young children will grow up with a distaste and even dislike for America; most will not even know why. When it comes time to defend America where will our youth be? We can already see the effects with countless young American's hating the military, thinking we are bullies.
Because of the failure of our schools system to teach our history, America's youth has no idea of what the cost was for our Founding Fathers to create this noble nation. They do not realize our freedom was not free, and peace is never attained or maintained peaceably. And now the NFL has sanctioned this behavior thus giving credence to our young to continue to disrespect America.
How many people know the story behind the National Anthem in which the NFL believes it okay to shun?
The British navy told the American soldiers at Fort McHenry if they lowered the flag, it would be a signal of surrendered and they would stop bombing them. We did not lower the flag and the Brits continued bombing throughout the night. During the night the Brits moved their focus to the flag in an attempt to bring it down. American soldiers gathered around the flag to ensure it would not fall; and at dawn when the smoke cleared the flag was still standing. Those soldiers gave up their lives to keep that flag flying and show the Brits they were not going to give up. This was the beginning of the end of the war.
Yes you can spit on the flag; yes you can burn the flag; yes you can call a cripple a gimp; however you should ask yourself, should I? Is there a better way to get my message across? And as a nation, we must ask ourselves, was the 1st Amendment really written to protect disrespect of the American flag and the national anthem?
