The Right Side of History: How ‘God-Given Rights’ and American Exceptionalism Are Inseparable
Commentary by Jarrett Stepman & Fred Lucas: “The Right Side of History” is a podcast dedicated to exploring current events through a historical lens and busting left-wing myths about figures and events of America’s past.
On this week’s episode, hosts Jarrett Stepman, a contributor to The Daily Signal, and Fred Lucas, The Daily Signal’s White House correspondent, discuss the concept of “God-given rights.”
NBC’s Chuck Todd recently mocked Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore for believing in God-given rights.
“Our rights don’t come from government,” Moore said in a clip Todd played on his show. “They don’t come from the Bill of Rights. They come from Almighty God.”
For making this comment, Todd said that Moore was a “fundamentalist” who “doesn’t appear to believe in the Constitution as it’s written.”
To help explain why the concept of individual rights is fundamental to American civilization, Lucas and Stepman were joined by Matt Spalding, who is the associate vice president and dean for Hillsdale College in Washington, D.C., and the author of the book, “We Still Hold These Truths: Rediscovering Our Principles, Reclaiming Our Future.”
