Gander Mountain Resurrected As Gander Outdoors
by Tom Knighton: Gander Mountain may be dead, but the passing is shortlived. After all, it was announced almost immediately that the brand would be resurrected as Gander Outdoors. The plan also included reopening a number of the previous Gander Mountain locations under the new brand.
Sure enough, a number of Gander Outdoor locations have already opened.
Well, now they’re opening 69 new locations for 2018.
Camping World Holdings bought the outdoor retailer after it declared bankruptcy last year, shuttering 162 locations and revamping the brand to offer a better selection of guns — among other items — at better prices. The first Gander Outdoors store opened last month in Lakeville, Minnesota.
“It was important to me to bring Gander Outdoors back to many wonderful communities across the country because the employees are top notch and the stores provide great products and services for the community,” Lemonis said, adding his team has been working “tirelessly” while preparing to open the stores.
Lemonis six months negotiating with existing landlords to finalize the list of surviving stores. At one point, the list dwindled to just 57 locations.
“We feel this list of locations is very solid and ready to be up and running in the coming months,” he said. “Two locations have already opened, two more are slated to open next week and others will begin opening at a very rapid pace over the next few months.” A list of 69 stores is going to be pretty long, obviously, but there’s one that really warms my heart. After all, my local Gander Mountain store, which is currently nothing but an empty building, is slated to be reopened.
The plan is to apparently have these stores opened by May of 2018, which is good news for many. I can’t speak for all of these locations, but I know many lack a big box retailer such as Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s (which are now the same thing, of course). While Mom & Pop stores exist in pretty much all of these places, those stores often lack the variety you find in a larger store.
Now, let’s just hope Gander Outdoors is much more sensible on their gun pricing than Gander Mountain tended to be.
