ICYMI: Indiana Drops The Hammer On The Indianapolis Colts
by Thomas Smith: First, the NFL faced massive outcry for allowing players to kneel during the national anthem. Then they lost a significant amount of revenue as fans stopped attending games and watching them on TV. Now, some states like Indiana, are forcing NFL teams to lose even more money.
A new Indiana bill would require the Indianapolis Colts to refund any fan who requested it due to the kneeling protests.
The bill is slightly more specific, requiring that the fan request the refund within the first quarter of the game. It also does not require the refund be given when it is the opposing team that kneels, not the Colts.
The protests began in 2015 when now-disgraced quarterback Colin Kaepernick became the first person to take a kneel for the anthem. The protest has caught on with other players in the league and has spread to now dozens of players choosing to kneel during the anthem.
The bill was introduced to the Indiana State House by Representative Milo Smith who felt that something had to be done to punish the team for allowing players to kneel.“I’m pretty patriotic, and it didn’t sit right with me. To me, when they take a knee during the national anthem, it’s not respecting the national anthem or our country. Our government isn’t perfect, but it’s still the best country in the world, and I think we need to be respectful of it.” Smith was inspired to write the bill after attending a Colts game on September 24th of this year in which multiple Colts players knelt during the anthem. Then one week later Indiana-native Mike Pence attending a game, at which the opposing team, Kaepernick’s former team the 49ers, knelt for the anthem. After seeing the players kneels, VP Pence left the game:"I left today's Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem,” Pence tweeted at the time. State Representative Smith and Mike Pence are right, kneeling during the anthem is a disrespectful act. And while the United States may not be perfect, it deserves nothing but respect. It is nice to see someone finally doing something about this disrespectful protest.
