Huckabee's Comments - Nov. 28, 2018

Former Arkansas Gov. Huckabee with
Bill Smith, Editor ARRA News Service
by Mike Huckabee: Pulled!
There’s a saying online about companies that knuckle under to PC pressure: “Get ‘woke,’ go broke.” Maybe we need to add one for TV shows: “Get ‘woke,’ get canceled.”

CBS’s recent resurrection of the 1990s liberal-lecture-of-the-week sitcom “Murphy Brown” will not be renewed after it pulled historically low ratings, including a 0.9 share of the key 18-49 demographic. That’s not surprising, considering that nobody in the lower end of that demo probably ever heard of it before. Like fellow Emmy Awards darling “The Daily Show,” it had the shelf life of a ripe banana. Nobody wants to watch smug Dan Quayle jokes in syndication.

I have a feeling you won’t see the latest version in syndication, either, considering it included such knee-slappers as Murphy lecturing my daughter Sarah on how to do her job, or last week’s episode that depicted ICE agents as evil and stupid, illegal immigrants as virtuous and put-upon, and lectured us on how unfair and mean it was that America has immigration laws that we expect people to respect. Just what Americans want to watch after a hard day at work. But now, the show has been canceled, so its creators and stars can go back to their secure mansions and apartment buildings, living safely behind walls and armed guards until they find another venue from which to harangue Americans about how horrible we are for not embracing open borders.

Meanwhile, I’d like to point out that some of the most popular shows on both cable and streaming services are such ‘80s and ‘90s hits as “The Golden Girls,” “Friends” and “Frasier,” which were built on interesting characters and funny jokes, not hectoring the audiences with leftist political opinions on topics of the moment. You’d think Hollywood would learn from that. But it won’t.

You Couldn’t Cut All The Layers of Irony With a Chainsaw.
Well, “Murphy Brown” may be gone, but at least America will always have Barack Obama to lecture us smugly on our many faults. Ironically, his latest comments were criticisms of America's elitists for their "great smugness" about their wealth and status. You couldn’t cut all the layers of irony with a chainsaw.

Incidentally, Obama repeated a criticism that’s become common recently among people who misunderstand or deliberately misrepresent America’s history. It's the idea that the Founders were such racists, they considered black people to be only “three-fifths” of a person. In fact, the "three-fifths clause" was extremely controversial in its day, and it did not brand all black Americans as three-fifths of a person.

It allowed slave states to count only three-fifths of their slaves toward their populations in allocating power in the House of Representatives, even though slaves couldn’t vote and were considered property. Many delegates to the Constitutional Convention strongly opposed the idea because it increased the political influence of slave holders, and some refused to support the Constitution because of it. But others reluctantly accepted it as a devil’s deal compromise only because the alternatives were either to allow slave states to count all their slaves, giving them even more power, or to have the South reject the Constitution, and the USA would have died in the cradle.

In short, modern liberals should stop being so smug about their superiority to the Founding Fathers. Most recognized the evils of slavery in an era when that was hardly the universally-accepted view, and did all they could to fight it at a time when that stance could be politically costly and even physically dangerous. In that regard and many others, they were genuine revolutionaries. How many of today's virtue-signalling "social justice warriors" who are afraid even to say the wrong thing on Twitter would have had the courage to do the same?

Liberal fury
Remember when President Trump asked why America was accepting so many uneducated, unskilled immigrants from "BLEEP-hole" countries? Liberals flipped their biscuits over that. What a disgusting, insulting, racist, imperialist thing to say! Why, all cultures are equally admirable, if not actually superior to Western Culture (which beggared the question, "Then why are so many of their residents fleeing here?") And they adamantly insisted that there is no such thing as a "BLEEP-hole" country.

Well, this blogger in Paris makes a brilliant observation. Now, all the outraged talk on the left is about what an unfeeling monster Trump is because he won’t let all these “asylum seekers” into America. They talk as if sending them back to their native nations in Central America would be as cruel as feeding them into wood-chippers. How can Trump possibly force them to return to those lands of oppression, crime, violence, injustice, poverty, disease…

Hey, wait a minute! What does that sound like they’re describing? As this blogger puts it, when the left’s latest darling “Beto” O’Rourke pleads, "It should tell us something about her home country that a mother is willing to travel 2,000 miles with her 4-month old son to come here," isn’t he really saying, “I, Beto O'Rourke; we, members of the Democrat Party; we, leftists all over the world, I/we agree with Donald Trump 100% that countries in Latin America are BLEEP-holes.” (Warning: he doesn't use the "BLEEP.")

I think this might be another example of a phenomenon I described recently in which liberals erupt in the loudest fury and outrage at Trump not when he says something incorrect, but when he says something they know to be true but that establishment “culture leaders” decided long ago that nobody was supposed to talk about.

The Mississippi Senate Race
As expected, Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith won Tuesday's Mississippi run-off against Democrat Mike Espy. The news media’s Democratic pep squad ginned up just enough hope that Espy had a chance to convince Republicans to turn out, and Hyde-Smith won by a comfy margin of nearly 9 points. This means that Republicans will have an expanded Senate majority of 53-47. That will help prevent certain flaky Republicans from holding conservative legislation or nominees hostage to their personal demands.

Hyde-Smith is also the first woman ever elected Senator from Mississippi, so I’m certain that feminists will be celebrating and congratulating her. I’m also certain that Boston baked beans come from Biloxi.

A few takeaways from this race: The “blue wave” has not yet succeeded in turning all red areas at least purple, certainly not areas as red as Mississippi. I also suspect that it’s a fleeting thing, a form of temporary insanity built almost entirely on emotional, unhinged Trump hatred and biased media coverage, and I hope that we will someday look back on the 2018 midterms as its high water mark.

Republicans don’t have to watch their red states be undone by failed liberal policies if they just show up and vote. Despite the media’s wishful thinking and attacks on Hyde-Smith, the only real longshot chance Espy had of winning was if all the conservatives who backed Chris McDaniel in the primary and thought Hyde-Smith wasn’t a strong enough supporter of Trump decided to be sore losers and punish themselves and their own state by staying home. Unfortunately for the Democrats, conservatives weren’t self-destructive idiots.

McDaniel’s endorsement of Hyde-Smith was hardly enthusiastic, but he did endorse her, declaring that Espy “cannot be allowed to win this seat” and citing Trump’s call for GOP unity. Trump also came to Mississippi to campaign for Hyde-Smith. The upshot is that Republicans can win if they don’t fall for attempts to divide them into warring camps -- the only thing today's Democrats are really good at -- and refuse to vote if the Republican candidate isn’t their perfect choice. They should always remember that just about any Republican is going to be closer to what they believe than the Democrat who will win if they don’t show up to vote.

This race might also mark a turning point at which the politics of personal destruction started to lose their effectiveness. It wasn’t lost on Mississippi voters that Alabama now has Democratic Senator Doug Jones because of last minute sex-related allegations against Republican Roy Moore; and Jones has since voted to support Trump’s agenda and nominees only 50% of the time in a state Trump won by nearly 2-1. Then there was the all-out assault on SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh (whom Jones voted against) that made the left's no-holds-barred, no-evidence-required slander tactics as obvious as they were repulsive. So when Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) tried to use clumsy quotes or photos of Hyde-Smith to paint her as an evil racist, I think may have struck many voters as an example of playing the same tired song one too many times. Let’s hope that the left’s “everyone who doesn’t agree 100% with me is a racist, sexist Nazi” trope has finally outlived its usefulness.

Finally – and this can’t be said strongly enough or too many times – this was the absolute, I-kid-you-not, final election of 2018! Those of us who are still capable of putting politics aside can finally do so and enjoy Christmas, which feels as if it came early with the political races finally over and the Florida ballot counting actually ending before Valentine's Day.

For those who look at the world through such a tiny wormhole that they feel lost without something political to rant about, there’s always saying nasty things about Melania Trump’s White House Christmas decorations on Twitter.
