Latest Polls Put Only Three Democrats in Double Digits; 11 Others at Risk of Missing 3rd Debate

These five candidates, plus five more,
have qualified for the third
Democrat debate, scheduled for Sept. 12.

by Susan Jones: Two new polls released Wednesday morning show three Democrat presidential hopefuls with double-digit numbers. Those polls confirm that ten Democrats will take part in the third Democrat debate, while eleven are likely to be left out (see below).

In both the USA Today/Suffolk poll and the Quinnipiac University poll, former Vice President Joe Biden leads with 32 percent support. Only two other candidates -- Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders -- broke double digits.

In the USA Today/Suffolk poll, Sen. Elizabeth Warren moved up 4 points to second place, at 14 percent, while Sanders dropped three points, to 12 percent. In the Quinnipiac poll, Warren placed second with 19 percent support; Sanders was third at 15 percent.

Sen. Kamala Harris and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg both had 6 percent support in the USA Today/Suffolk poll; Quinnipiac put Harris at 7 percent and Buttigieg at 5 percent.

Entrepreneur Andrew Yang had three percent support in both polls.

USA Today/Suffolk showed 2 percent support for former Congressman Beto O'Rourke and Sen. Cory Booker. But Quinnipiac put their support at 1 percent each.

The rest of the crowded Democrat field appears to be history, with every one of the remainders scoring less than one percent.

The latest two polls dash the hopes of candidates who needed to score two percent or more in at least four Democrat-approved polls to take part in the next Democrat debate, which will be hosted by ABC News-Univision on September 12.

Ten candidates have qualified for debate number three: Biden, Booker, Buttigieg, Castro, Harris, Klobuchar, O'Rourke, Sanders, Warren and Yang.

The following candidates will be left out of the third debate unless they can meet the 130,000 unique donor threshhold and score 2 percent in at least four polls by midnight tonight: Sen. Michael Bennet, Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, former Rep. John Delaney, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Miramar (Fla.) Mayor Wayne Messam, former Rep. Joe Sestak, Rep. Tim Ryan, political activist ("impeach Trump") Tom Steyer, and author Marianne Williamson.

Of this group, Steyer needs only one more qualifying poll, while Gabbard and Williamson need two more qualifying polls. Those three have already met the donor requirements.

No longer in the Democrat race: Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, and Rep. Eric Swalwell.
