Arkansas - Lower Wages - Taxed & Spent
Columnist David Sanders (Arkansas News Bureau) addresses the problem of low wages in Arkansas and suggests that the old tax-and-spend policies of the past haven?t worked: "For years, Arkansas government has been inwardly focused: Taxing more, spending more, and growing bigger bureaucracies under the guise of offering more services to meet the needs of the people. ... Arkansas incomes have not kept pace with neighboring states. Since the late 1970s, per capita income, expressed as a percentage of the U.S. total, has barely improved, moving from 71 (1971) to 77.7 percent (2005). ... Arkansas incomes ranked near the bottom. The old policies haven't lifted up the state. ... Increasing Arkansas incomes must now be a focus. Currently, Arkansans earning incomes over $29,200 are taxed at the state's top rate of 7 percent.
