Arkansas GOP Director, Clint Reed, Stepping Down
Last Update: Feb 15, 2007 12:59pm Clint Reed, the current top full-time official for the GOP in the state, is leaving to take a job with the Republican National Committee. Reed, 30, has been hired as the Republican National Committee's regional political director for the southern region. "It's our loss and the RNC's gain," Gilbert Baker, R-Conway, Chairman of the Republican Party of Arkansas, said. "He's done a great job for our party." Reed will stay in Arkansas for the RNC job.
Reed will official leave his post Thursday, but will help the party for several weeks during a transition period. No decision has been made on who will replace Reed.
Reed's departure comes after Democrats last year reclaimed the state's top two constitutional offices for the first time in a decade. Democrats won all statewide offices by double-digit leads last year, with Gov. Mike Beebe's 14-percentage point victory over Republican Asa Hutchinson the closest race on the ballot.
Following the November elections, Reed said the party needed to re-evaluate its strategy. "We must be an inclusive party that is not relegated to fractional or regional ideologues. We've got to continue to broaden our base in central Arkansas, northeast Arkansas and southeast Arkansas." Reed said in November that he believed the party would be able to broaden its support in what has been a traditionally Democratic state.
Reed started as the party's executive director in November 2004. Reed had been executive director of the party's Arkansas Leadership Committee, which coordinated the campaigns of candidates for federal, state and local offices in the 2004 election. Reed served as legislative director for the state party in 2002. He also served as assistant to former U.S. Sen. Tim Hutchinson, R-AR, from 2001 to 2002.
