Arkansas SB959 - Gay foster-parent ban advances
Arkansas Senate Bill 959 by Senator Shawn Womack (R-Dist.1) which prevents state foster parenting or adoption by couples who are not married, or who are single with a live-in boyfriend or girlfriend, or singles who are homosexual got out of committee yesterday and may be voted on even today in the Senate. [See NWAnews article] Please call and leave a phone message for your senator at the the Senate switchboard (501-682-2902) and ask them to vote for SB959. You may then wish to call your representative at Representatives (501-682-6211). Gov. Mike Beebe had promised to support a bill banning homosexual adoption but is now saying he doesn't yet know if he can support this bill because it "may" include elements he hadn't considered when he made that promise. His number is 501-682-2345. This bill is so hateful. Do you know it would prevent a grandmother from adopting her grandchildren if their mother and father die if the grandmother happens to admit she is gay? This bill will split up families. There are over 100 kids in Arkansas waiting to be adopted, many with special needs, why keep someone from adopting them just because they are gay? This is pure hate and doesn't help any kids.
The previous comment was also my comment but deleted due to a typo. The prior anonymous comment has incorrect information.
1st) The situation cited using the "grandmother" and "splitting up families" as an example is incorrect. The person should have clicked on the link to the bill provided. The act reads that: The limitations under subdivision (c)(1) of this section do not apply to an unmarried adult who has any one (1) of the following relationships with the child: (A) A sibling; (B) A stepparent; (C) A grandparent; (D) A great-grandparent; or (E) Any other unmarried adult who: (i) Is related to the child by blood or marriage; (ii) Has demonstrated the ability to care for the child; and (iii) Is otherwise eligible to adopt the child.
2nd) The bill is not hateful but is responsible legislation needed to protect children as detailed in the referenced study and other articles.
The number of only 100 kids in the entire State needing adoption is amazingly low for an entire state. Many of the children not yet adopted have not been adopted for specific reasons having nothing to do with heterosexual or homosexual consideration.
I would ask the former commenter, are you willing to again place children in homes where they are sexually abused and eventually killed. Safety of children must be first. Then placing them within their biological family members when safe and proper and or in traditional two parent home is the best setting.
From One who knows. An adopted child who was raised by a rational family with a mother and a father that provided balance as well as the freedom to grow, develop and to make choices.
"Under the bill, cohabiting heterosexuals would be allowed to become foster parents or adopt children if they’re related to the children and meet other requirements. But that exception would not apply to homosexuals, who would never be allowed to adopt or foster children under SB 959."
What are the odds that a "grandmother" who had children who then had children (there grandchildren) would all of a sudden be a homsexual.
In addition, since parents may legally assign the care of their children to an executor whould they become deceased. This executor may be the grandparent. Where is adoption an issue? If so where is DHS involved in this private family process?
The prior posts addressed grandmother not grandfather. Why no focus on grandfathers?
Doubtful that vry many of these situations of grandmothers now being homsexuals exist. Any statistics?
I think the bill is trying to set the properly guideline for the child. It is trying to place the child in a more rightful setting based on what is biblical .

The first post is correct. The statute would prevent the grandmother from adopting.
