Fred Thompson Wins Arkansas Republican Assembly Convention Straw Poll

Dr. Bill Smith, ARRA Editor: Today the 2007 Arkansas Republican Assembly Convention was held in Clarksville, AR. A press release of new officers and convention activities will be released and reported on in a few days. Of special interest is the result of a straw poll of delegates attending the convention. "All potential" Republican candidates who announced or have indicated they may announce were considered. Delegates discussed everything from candidates' positions on key issues to the "X" factor: who can win the election. Fred Thompson received 86% of the votes by delegates in a secret ballot straw poll as to the person they would most like to represent the Republican Party if elections were held today.

The straw poll was not a formal endorsement by the Arkansas Republican Assembly. However, the straw poll did provide the ARRA delegates to the 2007 Republican Assembly National Convention with a nonbinding expression as to whom the ARRA membership favors at this time. The National Convention will meet in Saint Louis on August 3 - 5. In the Fall, after Republican candidates for President have formally filed in Arkansas, ARRA delegates will have the option to endorse a presidential candidate.

While the Republican Party of Arkansas and its subdivisions may not endorse candidates in a primary, the Arkansas Republican Assembly as an independent caucus group is not so limited and may endorse and support candidates. The ARRA represents social, moral, and fiscal conservative Arkansans who believe in God, family, and country and who work to uphold moral and traditional family values and Republican principles and ideals. If you are one of these type people, check out the ARRA. For more information, please visit our website.

Please. This has to be a sick joke, Lucy, Charlie Brown and the Football Bush II redux.

86% for Fraud Thompson? When is the premier conservative Republican group in this state going stop letting the establishment media pick their candidates for them?

When and where is the next meeting and would I be shot if I showed up and were allowed to make a pitch for Ron Paul?

Is that Ron Paul the former Constitution Party candidate or Ron Paul the Isolationist?

To quote a comment by Michael Dougherty in a June article:

Popular in opinion, unpopular in polls

"A recent Strategic Visions Poll shows that 57 percent of Iowa Republicans want the U.S. to withdraw all of its military forces from Iraq within the next six months. Only 37 percent of likely GOP caucus-goers think the United States should stay past November.

If more than half of Iowa's Republicans want to get out of Dodge, why is Paul polling at only 2 percent there?

Simply put, he's not expressing his foreign policy in terms grass-roots conservatives understand or appreciate. In an oft-replayed moment from the South Carolina debate, Paul handled a question on the causes of Sept. 11 by giving a technical answer about 'blowback.'

He then encouraged the audience to 'listen to the people who attacked us.' Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani seized the emotion in the crowd and called the notion that we 'invited that attack' absurd."

As identified in the referenced ARRA post, "Delegates discussed everything from candidates' positions on key issues to the "X" factor: who can win the election."

As the old saw goes, If Wishes Were Horses, Beggars Would Ride. Time to stop wishing and get on with reality!

I appreciate that Ron Paul has led on many issues on which I agree especially his general views of less government. He has in general always been a friend of conservatives. Not that we agree with him about everything especially his view in dealing with Islamist Terrorists which is a pivotal decision along with protecting our borders for selecting our next President. Defense of our nation and defense of its citizens overseas are a Federal Government responsibility. Based on Ron Paul's comments, he would have been against President Jefferson's actions to go after the Barbary Pirates and against President Ronald Reagan's order to bomb Libya.

I noted that Ron Paul attended the California Republican Assemblies State Convention and received 12% of the votes. Not a winning number. Let's see how he does at the National Assembly Convention. I see he plans to attend.

As for your attending an Arkansas Republican Assembly meeting, I have been assured by our ARRA President that he has extended a welcome for you to consider becoming a part of the ARRA. I know there is an assembly in N.W. Arkansas.

I invite all social, moral, and fiscal Conservative Arkansans who believe in God, family, and country and who desire to work together to strengthen and to uphold moral and traditional family values and Republican principles and ideals to learn more about the ARRA by visiting our website.

Though Ron Paul received no votes during the Arkansas Republican Assembly strawpoll election, Mark may find it comforting to note that it was not because of oversight, neglect, or censorship.
Rather, the delegates think that national security and the decision to take the war on terror to Iraq is indeed an issue of supreme importance and wisdom contrary to what the liberal media and the Democrats are shouting to everyone.
I applaud the Republican Assembly delegates for their willingness to resist the media's candidates and issues.
I have always enjoyed conversations with Mark because he usually has good reasons for his positions, even if we do disagree. I always welcome his input. However, name calling is anything but convincing. I think in this case, he was at a loss of reason.
He can do better, and I look forward to future dialogue.

In my prior comment, I made a "quick witted" comment that Ron Paul being the "former Constitution Party candidate." I erred. Fellow blogger, Mark Moore, contacted me and pointed out this error.

I had so often heard some of my Constitution Party friends claiming Ron Paul that I indeed lapsed in memory from remembering that Paul was "Liberty" Republican.

Although Congressman Paul could not attend the NFRA convention because the US House was held over in session to complete action on legislation, the delegates had the opportunity to meet with and listen to his supporters, including his son Dr. Rand Paul. I was impressed by the commitment of 30 Ron Paul supporters who passed out literature and evidenced their commitment to Ron Paul. Click to learn more about Dr. Ron Paul
