Huckabee resonates with Iowa GOP crowd

By Kiley Miller, The Hawk Eye: . . . "Because my son didn't know what a dash was, he made up his own definition," Huckabee said. "I worry sometimes that we're on the brink of redefining -- of coming up with our own definitions -- of what life means, of what marriage means, of what freedom means." That statement alone could serve as a fair synopsis of Huckabee's full speech, a speech in which he laid out his conservative credentials and called on fellow GOP members to hold fast to the "principles that caused many of us to become Republicans." Judging by the captive looks and attentive stillness, the message resonated with many in the crowd, . . . Between the jokes and anecdotes, Huckabee touched on several key national and international issues. First and foremost, he said Congress and the next president must acknowledge that the greatest threat facing the United States comes from "Islamic jihadists" bent on destroying the nation. He also spoke about the importance of halting illegal immigration and maintaining a strong military, his commitment to the pro-life cause, and his belief the federal government should be kept small and efficient, with the most control in the hands of state and local officials closer to home. If Huckabee was not such a big government tax and spend Governor, he would have made a good candidate for Conservatives. Arkansas conservative won't support him because of first hand experience with this tax and spend Republican.
The July 28 Arkansas Gazette article by Alex Daniels sums the main problem conservatives have with Huckabee: "Huckabee’s speech followed a well-trod path. He said that, if elected, he would push for a consumption tax, try to focus health care on preventing disease rather than treating people and work to become independent of foreign energy sources within 10 years."
Mike believes in raising taxes and in big government solutions to all problems. The 2006 perpetual highway bond he fought so hard to push on Arkansans illustrates his love for taxes. In this case, he wanted to remove the obstacle of voter consent for taxation by giving the highway commission (not the voters) increased freedom to increase the bond burden on voters at will. This is increased freedom for big government not for the people. Conservatives define freedom as it applies to the liberating people not government. Conservatives value maximizing self and local government while reducing federal government in order to maximize personal freedom.
Further, a Conservative definition for a pro family policy will reduce tax burdens and government not increase them.
Mike knows the hot buttons to push among conservatives, he is a great speaker, and he is a charming personality. But Conservatives in Arkansas know that he does not practice what he preaches.
