Sanctuary Cities
Fred Thompson Commentary: If you listen to folks who oppose immigration and border enforcement, you get the feeling they think we put locks on our doors to keep everybody out. The truth is we have locks so we can choose who comes in.
An example of what happens when we don’t make the choice took place August 4th when three Newark, New Jersey, college students with great promise were executed, gangland style. The killers’ ringleader was apparently an illegal alien indicted twice in 2007 for felonies, including the rape of a kindergarten-aged girl. Why would such a person be set free instead of being handed over to authorities for deportation? The answer is that Newark is a “sanctuary city” which bans cooperation between local officials and federal immigration officials. More than 60 sanctuary zones, including 30 of America’s largest cities, provide a national networked haven for foreign and organized criminals who recruit and operate outside those areas as well. These sanctuaries include Cambridge, Massachusetts; Los Angeles, California; Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; Austin and Houston, Texas; Denver, Colorado; and New York City.
The consequences of “sanctuary cities” may be most obvious in the city that became the first in 1979 — Los Angeles. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, a confidential California Department of Justice study from the mid-1990’s showed then that at least 60 percent of the members of L.A.’s most violent gangs, with membership in the tens of thousands, were illegal aliens. Of all outstanding murder warrants in Los Angeles, 95 percent are for illegal aliens. Frustrated police say they are powerless to pick up even well-known, previously deported felons.
The costs of policies that offer shelter to criminals are borne not just by the citizens of Newark, Cambridge, and other sanctuaries though. According to the investigative arm of Congress, the Government Accountability Office, illegal aliens made up 27 percent of the federal prison population in 2005, totaling 49,000 and costing federal taxpayers $1.2 billion. There were also more than 220,000 illegals in state and local prisons and jails. Now, I am not suggesting that all illegal aliens are violent criminals. They are not. Most are peaceful folks just trying to get by like the rest of us. But we would be far better off if we checked on people as they come into the country rather than find out who the bad ones are after they victimize people here.
We have the right to keep criminal predators out of our home. Those who want to immigrate into America need to knock, identify themselves, and ask permission first. They will not do so though if we can’t even ask who they are, which is prevented in sanctuary cities. Now I am a strong federalist, but immigration is a responsibility of the federal government, and the failures of local officials to enforce our national laws have a direct impact on communities around the country. So federal law must be enforced, or our neighborhoods will continue to be the scene of chilling and lurid crimes committed by those who broke the law in the first place to come to America. [Source]

This is the straight, clear, honest talk that so many conservatives are seeking. It’s also chilling facts. Go Fred! I’m with you too!
This is a great posting by Senator Thompson. We need more conservative leadershiping calling on deporatation of all criminal aliens. Crime is bad enough in many of our U.S. cities without adding to it by continuing to ignore the problems caused by illegal gang members and non U.S citizens.
Go Fred!
Deport them. Millions at a time. Ike did. We have the technology and we have every reason to. We just need the political courage and the leadership to do it. It would save this country.
Citizens of each state need to demand their state legislatures get going on enforcement! There are no more excuses. Everyone who is stopped for anything, should be asked to prove their identity. If they cannot, they get checked on and held until they can prove who they are! Enough is enough. These kids in Newark need to be our inspiration for change!
Keep these little chats coming Fred! As more people hear what you are saying your supports will grow. I have decided to donate to your “campaign” for the first time in my adult life because I like the things you are saying as they make sense to me. Keep getting your message out and you just might end up as Prez. You got my vote!!
Thank you Fred for this post, we need to take our country back. How can we end sanctuary cities? I hope that when you are our leader that you can restore law and order to America.
Also, I am very anxious and concerned about Bush meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of Mexico in the next few days about creating a North American Union. This will not help the United States. Bush is throwing the U.S. under the proverbial bus.
We need you Fred!
The only thing that I disagree with in Fred’s article
is the statement that the illegals are “mostly peaceful folks trying to get along like the rest of us”…I’m sorry but when you break our laws sneaking
in here ILLEGALLY, I have a big problem with that.
To me, you are someone who is willing to break the law
to get what you want! I can’t do that. Most of our
countrymen can’t do that. So why should we feel all
warm and fuzzy toward lawbreakers? And toward families of lawbreakers…they are teaching their young that sneaking around breaking laws with impunity is fine and dandy! No wonder so many of the second, third, fourth illegal generations join gangs and are causing all manner of havoc in our cities. Illegals don’t honor or obey any
laws, they drive without licenses, they drive without
auto insurance, they get in line for welfare, they
take free medical care, they steal social security numbers, they use forged documents, and a whole lot of
them have “attitudes” that I can only describe as an “outrageous sense of entitlement”. They drive
drunk and cause auto accidents and kill or maim
innocent lawful American drivers…and on and on…
I moved back to north Texas from northern Virginia and it is as if I have moved to Mexico. I discovered that the house I bought was built by very shoddy workmanship by illegals. The concrete was mixed improperly and is falling apart plus many other serious problems. I go to the stores to find
them inundated with illegals who have a minimum of
5 children in tow but more often it is a family of
at least 10 people staking out a claim to the aisles
and the rest of us must wait for them to let us
shop when they are through. I am not exaggerating
in any way. And lately some of the illegals have
been starting fights in the local WalMart and
the men stroll through the WalMart and the Kroger
where I try to shop and you hear them making “catcalls” or “mooing” sounds at the female
customers. This is a very nice area north of Dallas and not an indigent area. And, I might add…this is at all hours of the day and night so if they are working so hard out there in their illegal status, why are they filling up our stores at all hours of the day? So many of our cities are becoming majority illegals. We must deport all these people! They
are weighing down our social services and generally
dissembling our country. They refuse to abide by
any laws.
And I agree with this post; what has happened to Pres.
Bush? We were his base and he seems bent on selling
us out to a “North Am Union” and paving a huge highway
from Mexico to Okla and on to Canada for all the
illegals…I should know…my new home appears to be
right in the path of this huge superhighway for
Mexico to invade our heartland (although they already
behave as if they own our country anyway)…our police can’t even ask them for an id! Is this insane
or what? But lawful American citizens must provide
lawful driver licenses and lawful proof of financial
responsibility (auto insurance)!
Why do the lawful law-abiding American citizens
continue buying insurance and driver licenses and
abiding by our laws? Because we are lawful and believe
in the rule of law and in decency and in truth and
right and the American way! But these illegals are
flaunting our laws and I frankly do not believe they
will ever obey any laws. When do they?
I think there are a whole lot more than any 20 million illegals here; they have been
flooding our borders since the mid 1960’s and I believe there are minimally 100 million illegals in
our country. We must get that fence built NOW and
deport all illegals once and for all or we will not
have a nation left. It will become some place called
“Amero” if the North Am Union types have their way.
What has happened to Pres. Bush? We WERE his base!
No longer. We must all pull together and restore law
and order before our beloved nation is gone…
Thank you for bringing this issue out in the open Senator Thompson. There should be no sanctuary cities in America. This message needs to be spread across America.
Sadly, Portland Oregon has become a haven for these law breakers. Mayor Tom Potter wants to build a nice place with taxpayer dollars for them to sign in and be picked up as day labor. He must feel it’s degrading to them to have to stand on the street corners waiting for unpatriotic employers to pick them up…
We had a similar situation in Chicago. An illegal alien with 20+ arrests who is a gang member ordered a shooting that resulted in the death of a 13 year old innocent girl.
Naturally guns were blamed, though Chicago bans all handguns and the shooter, naturally, was a felon who couldn’t have any gun anyway.
Finally, a candidate more concerned about constitutional truth than just getting elected. Thank you Sen. Thompson for standing up for states rights and speaking out against big government.
As for illegal immigrants, they are criminals and should not be afforded the same rights as ordinary citizens. Protection from search and seizure should not apply to them. Illegals need to be considered a threat to this country. They are slowly straining our economy and adversly affecting border states that could eventually be their ruin. The U.S. is the easiest country to enter legally. We have made it very simple for anyone who wants to enter this country and work with our blessing.
Many claim that deporting illegals will affect our economy in a negative way. I submit that deporting illegals will HELP our economy by lowering government spending on medical assistance, education, law enforcement and the strain on our prison system because of illegal immigrants.
Thank you, Fred, for the plain talk so desperately needed on illegal immigration. This is the make or break issue here in Arizona.
Go Fred!
