Gingrich to remain Citizen Activist - Won’t Run for Presidency
By Libby Quaid, AP: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will not run for president in 2008 after determining he could not legally explore a bid and remain as head of his tax-exempt political organization, a spokesman said Saturday. "Newt is not running," spokesman Rick Tyler said. "It is legally impermissible for him to continue on as chairman of American Solutions (Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America) and to explore a campaign for president." Gingrich decided "to continue on raising the challenges America faces and finding solutions to those challenges" as the group's chairman, Tyler said, "rather than pursuing the presidency." Only on Friday, Gingrich said he had given himself a deadline of Oct. 21 to raise $30 million for a possible White House and that the task was difficult, through not impossible. [Source]

Rick Tyler, Mr. Gingrich’s spokesman, confirmed today that the former Republican House speaker has decided against a presidential run in 2008. Mr. Gingrich was “presented with legal advice this morning,” said Mr. Tyler in a quick phone interview. “There was a choice presented.” The choice was to remain chairman of his political action committee, American Solutions, or to allow advisers to move forward with an exploratory committee.
