Breaking News: House Fails to Override Veto of Children's Health Bill
The House failed by 16 votes to override President Bush's vveto of the children's health insurance bill (SCHIP). U.S. Rep. John Boozman (R-AR) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives voted to sustain President Bush’s veto of the reauthorization plan for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) which is backed by the House leadership.
“I call on the House leadership to come forward and join with us across the aisle to find a true compromise which benefits America’s needy children and has the support of Congress and President Bush. No one in Washington is against SCHIP, no matter the rhetoric and hyperbole of the previous two weeks. SCHIP eligible children are still receiving the same funding today that they were eligible for on September 30. The question has always been the amount of expansion, how it was paid for, and the whether or not there was a guarantee that needy American children are first in line. The plan which was vetoed did not adequately address those concerns and contained fatal flaws which I could not support. It is my hope that responsible, bipartisan, alternatives can now be crafted – and, more importantly, discussed – so that we can get to the business of taking care of the needy children of our country.”Tags:John Boozman, President George Bush, SCHIP, State Childrens Health Insurance Program, US House, veto
