Congress in the way
Jim Davis, a longtime Pulaski County Republican Committee member and defender of small business, recently published a guest column in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette critiquing the Democratic Congress's plan to raise taxes on energy companies. Davis points out that the tax hike would drive up costs for small business owners. Davis writes: "Small business owners don't ask for a helping hand from the federal government. Unlike many larger concerns, they are not the recipients of corporate welfare. They can't afford to retain expensive lobbyists in Washington like big corporations. Instead, they merely ask that they be left alone to do what they do best: create jobs, serve customers and live the American dream. Why must Congress insist on standing in their way?" You can read the whole thing here.Tags:Arkansas, increased taxes, small business, US Congress
Another thing about this energy bill is that hike the Democrats want to put on CAFE standards. There's bipartisan support for a reasonable raise in fuel economy standards that even the auto industry is behind, but the liberals in Congress think that they can just legislate their way through everything. I do some work with the AAM and hiking CAFE standards is also going to hurt small businesses that depend on trucks and other large vehicles along with consumers who don't want to buy small cars. Their regulations are counter to consumer demand and we really need a lot of support on this aspect of the bill too. Definitely check out Drive Congress for more info when you can.
