Fred Thompson's Campaign Themes & the 12th Commandment
Fred Thompson is discussing campaign themes, and talking about how he intends to win back the Reagan Democrats by offering them a clear choice: 1) Limited Government VS Big Government and 2) States’ Rights VS Nanny State. In the Politico, Thompson acknowledges that the Reagan Democrats are still there – it’s the GOP that needs to be rebuilt: I asked him if that meant his party needed to find Reagan Democrats again. “I don’t think we need to find them; I don’t think they have gone anywhere,” he said. “I think we [Republicans] are the ones maybe that have moved in some cases.” Thompson said he meant that big spending and “ethical lapses” by Republicans were having a “dampening effect on our own people” and others but that “hopefully we are moving away from that situation.” At a time when fewer and fewer people are identifying themselves as Republicans, Thompson said he hoped to attract the votes of independents. California Yankee reports:Roger Simon asked Fred Thompson if he is an 11th Commandment man — Never speak ill of a fellow Republican — Fred responded: I am more of a 12th Commandment man: Don’t speak ill of them until they speak ill of me.
