Keyes Excluded from Michigan Presidential Debate

Salem-News: In the wake of the exclusion of presidential candidate Alan Keyes from next week's Dearborn, Michigan, Presidential Debate, conservative leaders in the Wolverine State today criticized Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis, whose neutrality in the presidential race has been repeatedly called into question. . . . "I think it is shameful that someone with Dr. Alan Keyes' experience in government and credentials in the conservative movement is being kept out of the debate," said Judy Zabik, Genesee County Republican Party Board member. "Voters in Michigan and across the country deserve to hear what this man has to say about where this country is and where it's going. He brings a principled, moral perspective to this race that nobody else brings." . . . [Read More] ARRA Comment: If Michigan GOP is going to let any of the lower tier candidates debate ( many with less than 2% in the polls), then let Alan Keyes debate. I would bet that if Newt had declared himself a candidate, Michigan's chairman would have found away to let him attend the debate. The Michigan Republican Party should be ashamed of Chairman Saul Anuzis potential incompetence, posiible bias toward certain candidates, and possible racial prejudice -- there is no room in the GOP for any of these traits!

I don't believe that there is any favoritism going on here. There are many reasons not to include Mr. Keyes. He has come late to the table, and his campaign is not as organized as the other candidates'. He cannot be considered a serious candidate, since he does not currently and has not ever held public office. His polling has been extremely weak, and his coffers quite anemic, lending to the widespread belief that he is a dark horse candidate with no hopes of winning the nomination, and therefor is nothing more than a distraction. And finally, he's black. . . . {racist comment removed by ARRA News Editors - violates comment guidelines - either this post was not from the person/ blog identified or the blogger whom claims to be a Christian Conservative and Reagan Republican is expressing positions diametrically opposite of what a Christian and Reagan Republican would believe. There is no place for racist comments in the Party of Lincoln and Reagan.)

The previous poster Blanca DeBree said: Alan Keyes "cannot be considered a serious candidate, since he does not currently and has not ever held public office."

Although he has not held an elected office, the following clearly identifies that he has held public office which required the appointment by Ronald Reagan and confirmation by the Senate:

Source: Alan Keyes is a genuine Reagan Republican who served in the U.S. State Department during the Reagan years. He was ultimately appointed by President Reagan as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations.

In that role, Dr. Keyes oversaw the development and implementation of U.S. policy regarding international organizations. He also served on the National Security Council staff.

As an Assistant Secretary of State, Dr. Keyes managed the work of diplomats in Washington and in several U.S. missions in New York and overseas — diplomats who worked on issues ranging from peace, security, and counter-terrorism, to democracy and human rights.

As part of his responsibilities over the Bureau of International Organization Affairs, Dr. Keyes also managed U.S. policy relating to issues before the UN Security Council.

Prior to becoming Assistant Secretary, he was appointed by Ronald Reagan as Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council — representing the sovereign interests of the United States in the UN General Assembly.

Before that, Dr. Keyes spent two years as a member of the State Department's Policy Planning Staff — following service as a desk officer in the Department's Office of South African Affairs and as vice-consul at the United States Consulate General in Bombay, India . . .

I am still not sure what to make of all this. Generally... I agree with Saul Anuzis, but I still don't know what to think about the debate situation. I don't support Alan Keyes, but he does deserve a chance. If Mr. Anuzis can allow Ron Paul, remember the stink he raised after the first debate, he can allow Alan Keyes. I just read that the big three automakers are in love with Mitt Romney, because his daddy owned the UCC (Ugly Car Company) or as it was officially called AMC. So there may be a little bias there.
Also, I want to say, sometimes I like reading this blog more than "That's Saul, folks!" You give info from all over the country and plus allow comments and allow many more links, that are not just Arkansas based, on the side bar.
