Mitt Romney has a Good Week: New Tax Ad, Receives Bob Jones Univ. Endorsments & General "Spider" Marks joins campaign
[ARRA News does not normally identify endorsements for the primary candidates because they are many and varied. However, on occasion, we identify ones that are out of the ordinary.] Michael M. Phillips at the Wall Street Journalreports that a top officials at Bob Jones University, the Evangelical Christian school with a history of anti-Mormon rhetoric, plans to throw his weight behind Mormon presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. Robert R. Taylor, dean of the university’s college of arts and sciences, said he believes the former Massachusetts governor is the only Republican candidate who both stands a chance of winning the White House and will reliably implement the anti-abortion, antigay marriage, pro-gun agenda of Christian conservatives. . . . Taylor acknowledged that endorsing a Mormon for president risked alienating the university’s conservative donors and alumni. Dr. Chuck Balwin: "Bob Jones' endorsement of the former Massachusetts governor illustrates just how low the "Religious Right will go in compromising bedrock principle for the sake of political expediency. Jones says he is supporting Romney so as to help defeat Rudy Giuliani. I very much want to see what Jones will do if and when Giuliani gets the Republican nomination."
