Tancredo days numbered as GOP presidential candidate
Others need to stop crowding the stage
by Steve Paulson: GOP presidential candidate Tom Tancredo said Monday that his campaign will be "pretty much over with" unless he can finish in the top three in either the New Hampshire or Iowa primary contests. Then, he says he'll decide whether to seek re-election to the House. . . .Tancredo remains at the rear of the field, ranking fifth in the latest home-state polls behind Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney. Still, he said he already has influenced the race by forcing the other candidates to address his signature issue, illegal immigration. . . .

However, I must address a statement by Tancredo in Steve Paulson article: "Bush and Republicans in Congress hurt themselves in last year's election by abandoning their principles." Tancredo is a Republican, and stood by his principles. Duncan Hunter, Ron Paul, John Boozman and many other Republicans served their constituents well and stood by their Republican principles in Congress.
It is disappointing that some candidates have chosen to practice political-flagellation. When Tancredo criticized all Republicans -- he also criticized himself. This is one reason that his campaign has gone nowhere with a majority of Republicans on the national level. Likely Republican voters are not looking for a presidential candidate who is "running against" the current incumbent president or the past errors of the former Republican congressional leadership. They are looking toward the future seeking to defeat the presumptive Democrat candidate -- Hillary Clinton.
Tancredo's campaign serves as a warning to the other presidential candidates. Republicans do not want to hear candidates run down the Republican Party or their elected Republican officials with statements of association. Republicans want a candidate to address what they will do if they were to become president and to evidence that if chosen by Republicans, that the candidate will afford non-Republican voters the best option to restrain Government's further intrusion into private lives and private resources, afford them protection and security, and provide future peace and stability within the U.S. borders for their children and grandchildren. And, as noted previously, they want to defeat the presumptive Democrat candidate -- Hillary Clinton.
Tancredo did not demonstrate these required elements to a significant number of likely Republican voters. There are several others lower tiered candidates who have also not demonstrated these elements. It is now time for these least likely candidates to withdraw and to stop crowding the stage and wasting critical time and resources.
