From Senate sources: The Politico notes the controversy around the family of 12-year-old Graeme Frost, who the Democrats used to respond to the president’s radio address last week and argue for an expansion of SCHIP. However, the article fails to note that the story originally gained traction among conservative bloggers (though it does link to a post by Michelle Malkin).

CQ Today reports on unions and other groups using SCHIP as a cudgel against House Republicans and on the alternative that Senate Republicans are offering.

The New York Times suggests Democrats may be ready to compromise on FISA legislation, but an AP report says their draft bill will demand “the details of all electronic surveillance conducted without court orders since Sept. 11, 2001” from the Justice Department. The AP also notes the Democrats’ bemusing name for their bill, the “Responsible Electronic Surveillance That is Overseen, Reviewed and Effective Act of 2007” or “RESTORE Act.”

In Case You Missed It: The buzz on talk radio yesterday was a story from The American Spectator’s Prowler reporting that “Rep. Henry Waxman has asked his investigative staff to begin compiling reports on [Rush] Limbaugh, and fellow radio hosts Sean Hannity and Mark Levin based on transcripts from their shows, and to call in Federal Communications Commission chairman Kevin Martin to discuss the so-called ‘Fairness Doctrine.’”

From On The Floor: The Senate is in recess until 2 PM on Monday, October 15th. The chamber with then resume consideration of the fiscal 2008 Commerce-Justice-Science (CJS) appropriations bill (H.R. 3093). President Bush has threatened to veto the $56 billion CJS bill. Prior to adjourning for recess, the Senate adopted an amendment adding $1 billion for NASA by voice vote. Following completion of the CJS bill, the Senate is expected to move to consideration of the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill (H.R. 3043). The Senate version of the bill provides $605.5 billion in funds.
