Brown Bag - The Case for Colombia Trade Agreement
Under Secretary for International Trade Christopher Padilla uses a grocery bag to share the reasons for the approval of the Free Trade Agreement with Colombia which is held up in the U.S. House by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Ninety-two percent of all Colombian products come into the United States today and pay absolutely no tariffs -- they enter our market for free. It has been that way for 16 years. However, U.S. manufacturers must pay tariffs to Columbia for goods they sell to Columbia thereby reducing profits for their companies and reducing potential benefits for their employees. Examples of American exports to Columbia and the tariffs imposed on American goods: Apples (15%), Farm Equipment (10-15%), Fertilizer (15%), soft drinks (Pepsi, Coke, etc. - 20%).
