Stimulus: Promoting Birth Control, Not Self-Control
Tony Perkins, FRC: Exactly what kind of stimulus did Speaker Nancy Pelosi have in mind? That's a question more Americans are asking now that details are trickling in about the controversial $825 billion "economic recovery" package. As it stands, more than 10 percent of the proposal--$87 billion--would allow states to expand their "family planning" services through Medicaid. The country's recession is crippling families, and the Democrats' solution is spending billions of dollars on contraception? On yesterday's "This Week" program on ABC, George Stephanopoulos pressed Speaker Pelosi for an explanation.
In the meantime, Congress continues to spend outside of its means, proving that the nation will need more children--not less--to help pay the bills for Social Security, Medicaid, and other government entitlements that Democrats hope to expand. Obviously, there's a practical danger in suggesting that babies are problems or "punishments" (as President Obama called them) instead of blessings that build bridges to the future. For a realistic look at real economic recovery, we encourage you to read FRC's just released tax policy proposal: FRC: Taxes in the Stimulus Package and the New Congress See also: Heritage Foundation brief: What Is the Spending Multiplier on a Pack of Condoms?

STEPHANOPOULOS: Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning services. How is that stimulus? In other words, children are a burden to the economy, and Pelosi believes it's the government's responsibility to eliminate them. More than anything, her comments underscore the shortsightedness of these liberal policies. All reports indicate that the global family is on the decline. Although America's birth rate isn't plunging like that of European countries, it has slowed. The reason we don't find ourselves in a "demographic winter" is largely because of the fertility rates of our immigrants, many of whom come from cultures that value life. Overall, the U.S. is hovering at its replacement level, which is hardly enough to finance the Baby Boomers' retirement. If Pelosi and her Congress continue to deemphasize the family, America will travel even farther down the deadly path of our European friends.
PELOSI: Well, the family planning services reduce cost... The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children's health... [is] to help the states meet their financial needs... [O]ne of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.
STEPHANOPOULOS: So no apologies for that?
PELOSI: No apologies. No. We have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.

This is just shameless! Pelosi needs to be tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail! This 825-Billion 2nd stimulus package is the biggest waste of future tax payer dollars, ever! It’s just a big money giveaway by the democrats who just love to waste our money and those of future generations! Obama is a socialist as well as Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, Dodd, Frank and the rest of the Kool-aid kids up there in D.C.. How do true americans vote these idiots into office? I’d say 75% of the electorate is so misinformed! What a sham!! It’s disgraceful!
Pelosi should live in China, this is still a free United States and How dare she plan for American Families. Close the Boarder and we will get less illigals and theier children here. Those people have most kids than working American Citizens. It is time that this Cabinet close our boarders instead they planning how many kids a family should have. I belive that that Pelosi will be punished from the above and soon, she is mendling way above her rediculouse brain.
Think about it: No one is forcing you to have less children or no children at all, however many children are born unwanted to poor and incapable parents. These parents are too ignorant and too poor to realize that simple contraceptive methods could have prevented this. Miserable parents make miserable children who grow up to be miserable adults either criminals or otherwise unproductive. Either way tax payers will foot the bill.
Anonymous said . . . "Miserable parents make miserable children who grow up to be miserable adults either criminals or otherwise unproductive."
This is the statement constantly used by population control supporters. And, it is not true. History is full of examples of people who came from bad situations but then lived normal lives many contributing to society in unique ways.
By Anonymous' standard, we should not help those who are starving in other parts of the world so as to reduce their lot in life as "Miserable parents" and "miserable children" who live in a constant state of "miserable conditions." By Anonymous' definition, these starving people will still have "miserable adults" and conditions and will become "either criminals or otherwise unproductive." Fortunately, most people know this is not true.
I can testify to the story of two children (a girl and a younger brother), born into miserable conditions in Appalachia to unmarried parents. These children then had the misfortune of experiencing more than one set of miserable parents and many very intolerable situations. It is reported that their own birth mother tried to drown them. The girl's father was a boozer and was killed eventually by a jealous husband. His bother, the boy's father had more than his share of problems and his own mother (the children's grandmother) turned him in to the police.
Through fate and situations, too complicated to detail herein, the children were eventually separated but found each other 28 years later. Even though each had lived though varied situations that would exceed Anonymous' definition of "miserable," each survived and developed values that made them productive Americans. They grew up, married and had strong families and marriages. Neither wound up in jail, neither did drugs, neither had children out of marriage, and neither choose to steal from others who had a whole lot more. They became contributing members of society.
The girl escaped her "temporary" family at 16 and married young man. They are still married after 46 years. They had several daughters and she loved and helped to raise many others.
The boy, eventually after odd events, would up on the road side in another state and was rescued by police and then placed in foster care of a young married couple who eventually adopted him, became his "true" parents, loved him and gave him a strong work ethic. Although raised poor he attended public school and worked his first job at the age of 11. At age 19, he married his high school sweetheart, age 18. They have been married over 43 years. He was drafted by the military and served his country for 22 years, becoming an officer and directing billion dollar programs for the government. He earned three university degrees and on retiring from the military became a graduate professor, a minister, a business owner, and a leader in his community and a voice supporting conservative traditional family values.
Both of these people went on to promote the family values which unfortunately they did had experience with their first parents. But as the girl often said, "if you have broken eggs, make an omelet."
I know these two people very well, for one looks at me every day in the mirror and the other is my sister, Louise. Both were "unwanted children, born to incapable parents" who lived in "miserable" conditions. Even though we grew up geographically separated without "enlightened non-miserable" parents, we did very well.
And our story is not even unique! Many like us are serving society!

Thankful to God for more than I can list!
In response to the ignorant-poor-miserable-parents-spawn-criminals-and-bums comment from above...
I was also one of those "unwanted" babies - born to a 19 year old single Mom who at least had sense enough to give me up for adoption at birth.
But I wasn't "unwanted" after all. I was adopted by a couple who very much wanted a baby and couldn't have one. I've never been on drugs, or in jail, or on welfare, and I've been quite "productive" thank you very much.
Oh - and I'm not miserable, either.
Barb, from Beverly Hills (above), had the right idea. Pelosi and those who think the government should be responsible for population control need to go live in a country where it is.
