Army Chaplans Burning Bibles?
Gary Bauer, Campaign for Working Families: After weeks of rumors, Jake Tapper of ABC News has confirmed that Bibles sent to U.S. troops in Afghanistan were confiscated and destroyed. The Bibles were translated into the predominate Afghan languages and were intended as gifts U.S. soldiers could give to the people. The Pentagon said the Bibles were a violation of regulations prohibiting proselytizing and could endanger the lives of our forces in the overwhelmingly Muslim nation.
But even if that argument is compelling, it is outrageous that the Bibles were burned or destroyed in some other way. The U.S. military has been ordered to go to extraordinary lengths not to “defile” a Koran. At GITMO our soldiers are required to wear gloves when handling that book so as not to offend Muslims. Is it too much to ask that orders be issued that Bibles be handled with as much respect?
When a Koran is mishandled Muslims riot all over the world. In contrast, when the Bible is defaced there are no riots in the Bible Belt, because we tend to remember the teachings of Christ that urge us to “turn the other cheek.” Frankly, I am running out of cheeks.

The Army should have returned the Afghan language Bibles at the expense of the organization who provided them (not at taxpayer expense). If that wasn't possible for some reason (and we might not know the whole story), then the Bibles should be respectfully burned. In that case, the chaplains would be the logical choice to see that this was done, ... Read Moreand indeed in a respectful manner.
I understand the Great Commission. But I also understand that it wasn't intended to be done at the point of a sword. The US military should not proselytize.
Whoever provided these translated Bibles to our soldiers, to give as gifts to Afghan people, was either irresponsible or was trying to cause an incident like this so that we could complain about it instead of focusing on security, low taxation, protecting the unborn, school choice, true freedom of religion, freedom of expression, privacy, smaller government, the second amendment.
Respectfully burn? You have got to be kidding! Where do you find that is a respectful way to treat God's Word? If they felt that they needed to be disposed of, then they should at least have been buried. The U.S. military may want to keep in mind the third commandment. "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord the God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain."
When this was a Christian Nation, We would have not a thought about giving out the bible to anyone in the world. This nation was founded on BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES, whether heathen degenerates (and some go under the guise of Christian) want to believe it or not. We Christians are not to hide our light under a bushel (burying it), or burn it for that matter. Our great commission is to send the gospel forth to the four corners of the earth as stated in revelation. Since the government in this country sees itself as a type of god (the god of pluralism) then you cannot be under the doctrine of this god and serve the true and living God of the Bible the sovereign creator and Lord of All Christ Jesus. Many of these poor servicemen do not know this. However, I am sure that some of them were awakened to a new understanding with this incident. America is such a great country and I am thankful to the Lord that I was born hear. I am so weary of the coming persecution of Christians in America. This incident is only a sample of what we will see in the coming months. May the Lord bless His children and give us His peace and protection that we may stand for truth no matter the adversity until He returns and we meet him in the air.
Pentagon still defends burning our troops BiblesLet us pray. Almighty God, this Memorial Day we pray for our troops serving in Afghanistan, especially those whose privately-owned Bibles were seized and destroyed by the Obama Administration, as Pentagon spokesman Major Jennifer Willis told reporters, “I can now confirm that the Bibles…were, in fact, collected by the chaplains and later destroyed. They were never distributed.” Her use of the words “later” and “now” indicate they were destroyed this month, not last year. We pray from Matthew 5:18, until heaven and earth pass away, God’s word can never be destroyed. In Jesus name, Amen.
